She finally smiled brightly and nodded, "Alrite! If ya say so, Ah'll go ahead an' jus' keep bein' me! An' hopefully that'll help folk feel happier an' maybe things will start changin' sum!"

She hoped...

"You never know, luv."

In the meantime, however, Jon simply changed the position of their meal on the fire to help it cook evenly.

"Otherwise, keep concentrating on your studies and your friends and live life as normally as you can."

Riwane smiled, "Ya don't need ta be worryin' 'bout that Moonshine! Ah've been keepin' wit mah studies an' even have a study partner now too! Jolt's been helpin' me out an' such."

"Jolt... vague feeling I've seen him about campus. One of Green's, isn't he?" Jon asked, poking the porker with his knife to let the heat get further into the meat.

"You'd do well to learn whatever you can from him - His trainer has seen no small measure of success."

"Yeah! That's him! He's the one Ah told ya that went out dancin' wit me at tha club that night. He's real nice an' fun ta be with. Total bro as they say in these here parts." she laughed as she said it, smiling at Jon.

"That's whut Ah heard, yeah. Green seems ta have an amazin' record as a trainer."

"That's him, eh? I see."

Jon would have to keep an eye out and see if he could catch Jolt at some point for a chat.

"If I remember what I've read and heard, he was Champion for a short stint till he was knocked from his perch by that Red fellow. Then he went and took over as Viridian's Gym Leader. At some point I daresay we'll challenge him and his team."

Riwane grinned and did a cheer, "Hell yeah! Ah totally wana test mah mettle against em! Though Ah have a feelin' they'll be playin' fer keeps so we're gunna need a team since they might use everyone they got on tha bench!"

"We'll need a team? We already have one. You and I." Jon replied teasingly. "What more could we need?"

Riwane laughed heartily. "A 'course we will! Ah know ya ain't a slave driver! As much as Ah'd love ta believe it, Ah won't be able ta take on six in a row! Maybe four." she said confidently, laughing in turn.

"....I think I need my ear hair trimmed. For a moment there... just a moment, mind... I thought I heard you say there was something you couldn't do! I know that's not something Riwane the Charizard would ever say, however, so it must be a build up of wax or parasitic ear mites or something."

Riwane laughed and punched his shoulder.

"Oh come off it Moonshine! Y'know Ah'd go for it all alone if I was certain Ah'd at least get a challenge, like facing four of em', but six is ovahkill, even for a lass like me!"

Jon just smirked.

"Oh, alright. I suppose you've a point. There aren't any other candidates for our team exactly lining up, however, so, for the moment we'll just concentrate on working together, just the two of us."

He wasn't about to go through with catching Pokémon in the wild - no matter how much Jock said it was alright, he just couldn't see it as anything but kidnapping.

"Yeah... Ah know... Ah was kinda hopin' Rio would have come, or maybe you could recruit that Evvee. Ah guess we ain't really that appealin' or sumtin'"

Welp, way to depress yourself Riwane.

"Well, Luv, you've got to look at their point of view. I'm a rookie trainer at the age of twenty two when most rookies are ten to twelve. I come from a place completely different to that of most other trainers, and I'm not even Human. Then, you've got the unfortunate combination of my personality... not the warmest and most welcoming lad about town, in case you've not noticed... and the fact that we generally meet other Pokémon in the same place Gym Leaders and former League Champs go to school."

He'd thought on this a lot, obviously.

"There's nothing wrong with our team, but the board IS stacked against us somewhat. As for that Eevee, you mean Evve? I'm not sure she'd ever want to battle. I took her hunting once, and l let her help me knock down a Chocobo in the woods out back. She felt pretty guilty about it, not that she said so out loud... I've a notion she's not so much a fighter."

Riwane's tail only drooped down, dragging on the floor now and she sighed.

"Yeah... Ah guess yer rite. Ah just..." she paused, looking mighty guilty to the point where she was averting her gaze and keeping it that way.

"Ah luv us, don't git me wrong... Ya know that this has made me real happy, bein' with ya and takin' on Gyms and hell! Even makin' major progress..."

And of course there's the but...

"But... Ah'd be a rotten liar if Ah said I didn't envy whut tha other teams have yanno? ... A family, a team.... so close and jus'..." she sighed. "They look so happy all together like that. Ah wish Ah knew whut it felt like at least once yanno..."

She turned and sat down, her head now tilted upwards to look at the night sky.

"Ah'm sorry... Ah should appreciate whut Ah got an' stick to it jus' like gran said..."

"Ah..."

He felt bad. Of course he did - how could he not? But they came from very different places and ways of thinking about things. For him, two people was more than enough and he still felt the need for alone time. For her, well - he'd seen her family. It was extensive, warm, close knit.... and why shouldn't she miss that? If it had been his upbringing, chances are he'd miss it too.

"....I'm sorry I'm not enough for you. I mean that. I can understand you being envious of the other Pokémon with larger teams and I'd love to give that to you. But I'll not catch wild Pokémon and my point of view on that front is unlikely to change." He turned the pig over and stoked the fire. "I suppose I could be more forthright about asking trainerless Pokémon if they'd like to spend some time with us... see how well they fit and if they'd enjoy our company. But I can't guarantee that they'll like Me, my training methods or my expectations. Not everyone is as forgiving as you."

"Don't say it like that Moonshine!" she turned immediately, now in tears. "Ah didn't mean it like that... Ya know it! Ya know ya mean a lot to me Ah jus'.... Ah miss it... That's all! Yer special ta me, Ah shouldn't have been a royal brat 'bout it."

And now she was sniffling and cursing to herself for showing weakness and being a bitch. She kept trying to wipe her face with the back of her sleeve but they wouldn't stop, much to her annoyance.

"Oi, calm down." Jon replied quietly, getting up and walking over to place his hand on her shoulder. "I say everything 'like that' in case you'd not noticed. I know I mean a lot to you. You to me, as well."

He did his best to smile at her. "And I said, I understand and I'll see what can be done. I'll not make any promises - I may not be able to keep them if I did."

She didn't say much of anything as she tried to drown out her sorrow. Riwane simply held unto him and hoped that the tears would stop soon or she'd have to 'take a walk' to hide her shame.

He was content to wait until she'd calmed herself. He rested an arm over her shoulders and simply waited in silence. He'd said everything that he could say on the topic - He understood why Pokémon weren't exactly lining up around the block to be a part of their team and that was their right. He'd not force anyone to join him. That just wasn't his way.

Once she finallyt calmed down, she looked up at Jon and smiled a bit awkwardly.

"Ah must look like a wreck huh?" she spoke as she chuckled. "Sorry... Didn't mean to go all weak there hon."

"You look beautiful, as you always do. And there's nothing weak about wanting more out of life. True weakness is to just accept your current status quo and not seek to change it." Jon replied quietly, wiping a tear or two from her cheek with the soft pad of his thumb. "And we'll do what we can to change things more to your liking, alright? If you've anyone in mind to join the team, feel free to chat to them about it and see if you can't get them to come talk to me. I think you may get a more positive response than I would."

Riwane actually blushed, which is somewhat of a rare thing for her to do as she herself was a bit surprised and looked away, trying to play it off by rubbing the back of her head and laughing a little.

"Alrite, fair 'nuff. Ah think Ah'll go ahead an' try that then... Ah jus' wish Rio wasn't havin' so much trouble convincin' gran gran ta let him come to school. At least Ah'd have one team member an' one Ah trust a ton... Even if he is more of a Contest Pokemon than a Pokemon Battle type."

"Well, I'm sure Grandmother has her reasons. But aye, it would be nice if he could come along. And who knows, you might do fairly well as a contest Pokémon yourself if we ever decided to try our hands at it. Those.. ah... those ribbons are hardly Gym Badges but they're still an achievement."

"Whut? Naw, that sorta thing ain't fer me. Ah went to a few of em' with Rio when Gran took him to the contests. He's good, got a few ribbons under his belt, but it jus' didn' feel rite ta me. Ah guess Ah'm too competitive, Ah'd feel Ah'd sooner whoops a fireblast unto the opposing contestant than dazzle tha crowd with ma move!" she joked with a hearty chuckle.
