Dorm Log The Sequel To End All Sequels

Who: COLLECTIVE YOU
What: Dorm log!
Where: Student and Teacher dorms, and quite possibly beyond campus. If your heart dreams it, your fingers can type it.
When: The span of February 27 - March 13
Warnings: This log is yellow-taped with all kinds of potential warnings. If your filthy imagination can conjure it, this log can produce it.

Ripped off the last one and all its friends: Basically, here's how this works. We all know our characters experience downtime after classes and their busy schedules, and this is a good venue for those kinds of miscellaneous dorm-shenanigans to take place. Not only does it give your characters the easy chance to meet new people in a laid-back environment, but it's a good mechanism for strengthening CR. It's easy!

Feel free to begin in any way you please! Plan with (a) fellow player(s) if you'd like! Or, set up a thread and wait for characters to bite! Whatever you want. It can all be yours if you make a thread. Feel like drawing graffiti on Professor Jin's door? Apologizing for the aftermath of the latest cupidbot fiasco? Doing each others' hair and talking about boys? Giving your trusted(?!?) friends a free ride in the dryer? Staying up late at night making use of those dick-shaped cake pans you found in the cupboard? Man, I don't care, just do it! Don't let this log get away untagged.

Mary - BW-11

Or maybe she's in the common rooms, watching TV or drawing. Maybe she's playing in the slush outside.

Maybe you're hurting for a certain candy, and she's selling just the thing to soothe your cravings.

Eirika's first visit to the common rooms was a memorable one. Well, memorable in the event of finding yet another younger child at the academy. She'd seen a few, idly wondered just what the age restriction on tutelage, or if there was one. But she'd not asked about it either, not entirely comfortable with exposing her sheltered lifestyle so easily.

After all, where she came from, most commoners didn't have that sort of knowledge.

What she did like doing, however, was watching Mary draw. It was endearing, if she was going to put a label on it. Never mind that Eirika herself was probably coming off as a bit of a... creeper, at the very least.

Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), Mary was the kind of child who didn't find things like stopping and staring at people to be creepy or unsettling at all. In fact, as a painting who had been hidden from the public eye for decades, she was overjoyed whenever she did have a captive audience all to herself.

She glanced up from her drawing, one of a melting snowman she'd seen outside earlier that day, and smiled brightly at the stranger.

"Hi!"

She was... a bit bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, wasn't she? Eirika was undoubtedly surprised by Mary's very open and welcoming greeting. It was almost a little moving and in some ways, made Eirika minutely think of her own childhood. But Mary seemed far less reserved and quiet, and if anything, Renais' princess had been only talkative around people she was comfortable with. Anyone not within that range was someone she grew a bit meek around.

She hadn't been a very effective princess when she was young, admittedly.

"Hello," she replied after her surprise faded. Left in its wake was a reserved smile and Eirika tipped her head. "I didn't mean to interrupt you. I'm enjoying watching you draw." She cast a glance to Mary's work of art before looking back to the artist herself.

"Heehee! That's okay, I'm almost done!"

All she needed was a line of orange for the drooping carrot nose, and... done! She held her masterpiece up proudly, beaming. "Ta-daa! What do you think? I'm pretty good, huh?"

It was a blue-grey blob for the most part. Given the state of any snow sculptures left outside, it might have been pretty accurate after all.

Considering Eirika had never drawn or coloured a thing in her life, the princess was easily impressed. Especially when she had to keep in mind that Mary was just a child. "I think it looks wonderful, however..." Her posture straightened and she tried to think if she'd seen anything similar to it in Magvel. After deciding that was a negative, she continued, "I've no idea what it is."

But Mary seemed nice and not at all like a kill-happy girl, so Eirika hadn't thought it impossible for her to take the time to explain the details behind snowmen and their practicality.

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-20 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Wrong thing to say, Eirika. Mary's expression instantly soured, offended that her great artistic talents weren't good enough to have her subject be instantly recognized. Or else this lady just didn't have an eye for art. Either way...

"Huh? It's the snowman outside by the library!"

Yeah, duh.

"See? There's his nose and his head and his arms." She pointed each part out.

[personal profile] heartofarapier 2013-03-20 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
She saw that expression and wasn't so naive as to not understand what it meant. So an explanation was due. Eirika smiled a bit bashfully, "I have never seen one before. I know of what you speak, but upon my arrival here, it was the first I'd crossed paths with. Until you said just now, I was unaware it had a name."

So she tried on the alias for size. "Snowman." Then she motioned to space beside the girl and tilted her head, as if a quiet way of asking permission to join her. "And what does a snowman do?"
paletteknife: (Now my empty cup)

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-23 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that explained everything. This was Mary's first winter too, after all (well, spring now - which was also her first) so she could understand someone being new to everything. Where could she have possibly been from that didn't have snowmen? As far as Mary was concerned, everywhere did.

And she got to be the one to bestow her wisdom on this poor newbie! She was important!

She looked unbearably smug as she patted the ground next to her. "A snowman... um... It's a decoration for winter! You make them by rolling up snow and putting faces on them!"

...Wow, was that really all there was to it? She frowned a little.

"They don't do a lot..."

[personal profile] heartofarapier 2013-03-26 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
It didn't take much more an obvious invitation before she moved to sit and join Mary. Still ladylike and yet curious, she felt like both a young child and a woman too wise beyond her years. Eirika listened attentively, wondering what the significance was of such actions. Why was it necessary to roll up snow, much less to make faces in it? Perhaps it was some form of cultural or traditional celebration of legend?

"I have never heard of such a thing." She was still smiling, amused by the concept, and more than a little lost in awe over the entire concept. "Would you say they're meant for decor then? Like a statue, perhaps? Or flowers in a garden? Or a water fountain?" Because more than likely, Eirika wasn't truly understanding the logic behind making snowmen.

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-28 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Um... Maybe not like flowers or statues..."

Her voice, which was so confident and proud before, was dropping in volume as she began to doubt herself. She hadn't read anything about what snowmen were for</>, just that they were fun to build. That was a thing children did in winter, like snowball fights and eating snow with colourful syrup on it!

Did other kids know the reason for doing things like that? Was she supposed to know, too?

"I don't know what they're really for..."

Mary hadn't done well to hide her uncertainty. Either that or Eirika was just intuitive, and that wasn't particularly untrue either. She didn't say anything at first, but as she eyed Mary's picture, she found a valid point. Children need to see a reason in all things. She'd had to, but she had a feeling that she and Mary were going to grow up in two entirely different worlds. And that was okay.

"Sometimes things do not need a purpose. Sometimes they are... just to be." And she wasn't sure if Mary would understand that, but it was her own form of reassurance. Snowmen didn't have to have a purpose if Mary didn't know of one and the girl needed to know that was acceptable.

Things that just existed for the sake of existing without any purpose... A snowman, which stood there and did nothing. A painting, that was looked on and passed by. Eirika's words didn't really comfort Mary at all.

"...Well, they're fun to make! That's probably the reason they're there, haha! It's too bad the snow's all melty, or I'd show you how..."
heartofarapier: ([joy] akin to pleasantries)

"Fun to make..."

As if the very concept was lost on the princess. Fun itself, wasn't exactly a foreign idea, but she imagined her idea of 'fun' was different from what other people thought. Eirika had, at times, thought the banquets and social galas to be a little fun. Sparring with her brother had grown minutely fun after a fashion. Running around with Frelia's princess when they were both younger had been fun.

"I think if it is... fun, then that is the best reason there could be for it to have purpose," she smiled, conceding to the idea. "When the snow returns, you ought to show me. I'm interested to know of this fun of yours."
paletteknife: (And curse those faults in me)

NO...

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-04-11 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
"Really? Yay! It won't snow again for a really long time, I think, but there's a lot of other fun stuff we could do together until then!"

At least she seemed to cheer up a little. She had a new friend who wanted to do stuff with her! Actually, if they were going to be friends, she should probably introduce herself a little more properly.

"My name's Mary, by the way."

UHM. YES.

In the common room one day, in walked Maisy! And what a wonderful sight it was when she saw Mary there, doodling away. It hadn't been absent, but a smile was on her face when she saw her, and she called out her name happily as she approached the other blonde-haired girl. "Maaaaarry!"

She had a book in her hand, but no other objects of interest on her.
paletteknife: (You greet another son)

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
She looked up with a small gasp of delight.

"Maaaaaisy!"

Wow, was she going to do that every time? Damn right she was.

Her current work in progress was a bowl of fruit, because she had heard that still life was important for a budding artist. Except instead of drawing from life, she had drawn an enormous bowl with whatever fruit she could think of peeking over the top. Even a watermelon. She held it up for the Mareep to see.

"Look what I drew!"

[personal profile] fluffsyou 2013-03-18 02:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Maisy stopped before Mary, and brought herself down to her level- and if that level might mean joining her on perhaps a floor, then that was where Maisy would also be. Regardless, she looked at Mary's masterpiece with interest, looking at the individual pieces that were showing in the bowl.

"Maaa, it's preetty!" Maisy exclaimed, looking at the different colours of each piece. She squinted at the same time, to try and get a better look at the details (a difficulty at times for the sheep girl's eyes), though was soon enough pulled away from that at the curious scent of the paper due to the crayons. She sniffed the air before it instead.

"It smeeellls."
paletteknife: (On some sunny day)

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-20 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Huh?" Mary was so accustomed to the smell of paints and crayons that she barely noticed it anymore. She held the drawing to her own nose and took a deep, exaggerated breath, strong enough to make the paper move a little.

Hm!

"Does it smell bad?"
fluffsyou: (pic#5704818)

[personal profile] fluffsyou 2013-03-20 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Did it smell bad? Maisy tried to think about it, making a low "maaaaa" sound for the moment that she did.

"I don't think soo... but it's straaange."

She put the book down that she still had in her hand, and looked at the other things by Mary. "What is it?"
paletteknife: (I've lost my home to thieves)

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-23 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
She sniffed again, but couldn't find anything weird about it. Smelled like regular old crayon wax to her.

"It's a fruit bowl! See? There's a banana, and an apple, and a watermelon, and a strawberry, and an orange. I wish it could smell like fruit, too."
fluffsyou: (pic#5574945)

[personal profile] fluffsyou 2013-03-26 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
All this fruit talk was making her mouth feel extra wet, even though she had no idea what a 'watermelon' was. Maisy shook her head though, and pointed to wherever Mary's tools of the trade were.

"Noooo, ma, how did you draaw iit?" Maisy asked again. Whenever she saw Garry doing artsy stuff, it was always with bigger things! But the thought of Garry, and art, and delicious fruit all popped a most important question in the girl's mind.

"Can I draw fruit bowls tooo? I want a fruit booowwlll... with grass, and flooowers! And berries!"
paletteknife: (You cast aside the sheet)

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-03-28 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, these?" She grabbed a pink crayon and held it up, eager to show off her prized possessions. Right, a sheep wouldn't know about colouring! ...Probably! At least Maisy didn't seem to.

"I used crayons! You can draw on paper with them and there's a whole bunch of colours! You can use some and we can draw together!" She took a few papers off the stack she'd stolen from one of the school printer and slid them towards Maisy. A drawing partner! This was exciting!

"But grass and flowers don't go in fruit bowls! They go in flowerpots."
fluffsyou: (Default)

[personal profile] fluffsyou 2013-03-31 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Her eyes went from the pink crayon (pink! like flowers!) and then to the blank paper.

"I like grass. Can I draw grasss?" As she asked, Maisy patted her hands flat against the paper and then picked up to her nose, to take a whiff to see if there was any difference to it from any of the other sort she had ever had before. Her schoolbooks, the library books- they always seemed to have a different scent to them whenever she did. Can't pass smelling Mary's paper, either!

Her eyes peeked over the paper, and she added, her mouth muffled against the sheets- "Do they gotta be in floowerpots?"
paletteknife: (I'm asking you please)

[personal profile] paletteknife 2013-04-03 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha ha, why did Maisy keep sniffing everything? She was a sheep, not a dog! And obviously dogs were the only animal in existence to use their sense of smell for anything. She couldn't help but grin a bit at Maisy's strange behaviour.

"Hm... I guess not! They can be outside, too!"
