[ Well, at least she hadn't called him 'Sonic'. Bonus points for this one having some decent recognition skills. ]

[ His stern reply came with a brief, awkward silence right after, although he couldn't admit to caring about any unease. He was a man- hedgehog of few words. If anyone had an issue with that, he simply found it to be their problem.

He peered over to her cup, then to his, his smoky darjeeling tempting him to just shut up and drink. ]

You are also a hedgehog, I take it... or a porcupine?

[ His claws tapped the ceramic before he finally lifted the cup and took a sip. Mm... It needed another minute or two. ]

[Well, this conversation was going pretty slow...which was nice, to be honest. Sure, it was a bit, well, awkward, but it was a good change of pace.]

Ah! Yes, I'm a hedgehog. I know we look similar to porcupines, but...no, I'm a hedgehog. Hee hee...

[Oh god this wasn't going anywhere, she needed to change the subject!]

To be honest, I'm rather glad to see more hedgehogs here in the school. Don't get me wrong, it's not like I have a bias towards anyone. It's just...nice.

[...okay, that kind of worked, she guessed.]

[ Ah.

Was this one not very social either? He hardly took her as a socialite, but she didn't seem hesitant to interact either. She just seemed a bit uncertain, perhaps, on what to do? What was that like?

Maybe being surrounded by obnoxiously loud people made him forget what to look for there. Very plausible. ]

It may be familiarity. It tends to bring ease.

[ Shadow finally met her eyes, his own surprisingly calm despite their harsh and saturated red hue. She seemed so demure. It almost made him feel a little extra careful about how he spoke to her. Almost.

What could he say? He was just a blunt person. ]

There are a few of us here. You will hardly feel alone if you know where to look.

[ Especially what with outgoing and persistent types like Sonic around. ]

[Sable nodded. That made sense. Even in her hometown, her and her sisters were really the only hedgehogs living there, so being around other hedgehogs that weren't family was a bit refreshing.]

That must be it. I can't think of any other reason why it's nice.

[Sable then put a paw to her chin and thought for a moment. She was certain that they weren't the only hedgehogs at the school...there was at least one more...and then she jumped up a bit, in realization! How could she forget?!]

Oh, that's right! There's another hedgehog here, too! The nice blue hedgehog...Sonic, I think his name is! Yes, now that I think about it, there isn't a possible way to feel truly alone without some fellow hedgehogs here as well.

[ Goddammit. ]

Hmph. Nice. Right.

[ Nice whenever he stopped acting like a gigantic fool and making people feel like idiots just for being around him in the first place. (Somehow, for Shadow to think that about Sonic was still mild by comparison to what else he could be blabbing.)

Shadow inhaled deeply, the scent of his tea proving more appealing than the conversation at hand now. What else was there to say? Mundane things about how nice it was to have other people of the same species? Rather, that was Sable's opinion, not his own. Species never mattered to him, especially not for an artificial being like himself.

It was then that the aroma of her coffee hit him in the face, wafting over his own tea and snapping his attention away from it. He'd never had much coffee in his time, and what little he did, he always had with excessive sugar and cream to drown out the flavor. This one smelled... very good, however. It enticed him. It compelled him. ]

What- [ His ears perked, eyes lifting up to her once more. ] What kind of brew is that?
