Dorm Log: Scorching Summer Edition

Who: Who else.
What: Dorm log!
Where: Student and Teacher dorms, and quite possibly beyond campus. Frankly? I don't care where. Go have fun, kids.
When: The span of June 14 - June 28th. Pick a date.
Warnings: Yeah, it got pretty naughty in here.

Ripped off the last one and all its friends: Basically, here's how this works. We all know our characters experience downtime after classes and their busy schedules, and this is a good venue for those kinds of miscellaneous dorm-shenanigans to take place. Not only does it give your characters the easy chance to meet new people in a laid-back environment, but it's a good mechanism for strengthening CR. It's easy!

Feel free to begin in any way you please! Plan with (a) fellow player(s) if you'd like! Or, set up a thread and wait for characters to bite! Whatever you want. It can all be yours if you make a thread. Stay up all night watching reruns of Teenage Mutant Ninja Squirtles? Break out the ice cream and industrial fans to beat the heat? Get a bad suntan while you're asleep with the help of your friends? Whatever you get your bad self up to. Your good self is welcome, too. Now put your copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf down for one second and tag this thing!

Things had fallen to something of a dull roar, fortunately for Smash Academy's residential mute prince. Oddly enough he was meeting new people. Oddly enough he wasn't making enemies. Oddly enough Vianca had yet to give him a stern talking-to or anything else of that nature.

In short. All seemed relatively... good in Caim's world. And he doubted such a thing would last long. But perhaps he could simply hold onto it.

Wherever he might have been, shopping trips and eying his classroom with nostalgia, the man carried an odd bit of peace about him. It was probably the calmest he'd felt since his fated arrival when he fell from the ceiling into a crowded hallway of bad dancers and crappy music.

Instead of spending all her time wandering around campus hoping to run into Caim, Chiyo thought it best to check out where he might be located at the office. Once the information she needed was acquired, she made the journey to his dorm room all the while thinking of what she'd say... or er, write. She paused by his door and stared at it. Then she stared at the blank spiral bound notebook in her hands. Neither of them were helping her with what she needed to say about her predicament. Their little blank stares and frowns back at her were proof of that.

"Hello Teacher Caim. I think I'm mute, too." didn't seem like the fanciest idea. Ever. But what else could she write? In her new situation, she didn't really know where else to go, and Caim was the first person she thought of since he was, now, a fellow mute (at least, the only other mute that she knew of here at Smash). It brought her some comfort to know that she wasn't alone in her inability to speak, however long it would last.

She sighed. She really needed to write something as it would look strange to write instead of speak when she greeted him.

Ugh. Oh well, no use fretting it! she thought to herself and tried to quickly write down her greeting ("tried to" since she still wasn't adept at writing) before knocking on the door and holding up her note with a somewhat anxious smile.

Hello Teacher Caim. How are you today? I'm sorry to bother you, but I didn't know where else to go. You see, I think I'm mute?

He'd not been doing much. In fact, he'd been doing very little aside from eying his wall, thinking how it bare it had been once, and how he hoped Ai might never leave. If only for the sake of continuing to cover his walls with endearing pictures. He'd wanted to convince her to start painting again, and better yet, he wanted to join her. To paint together...

There were few things more that the prince thought he would have enjoyed to the same extent.

But all it was, was distant thought. Fleeting, actually. So fleeting, in fact, that the knock on his door broke in immediately. Rousing himself from his relaxed lounging on his bed, he opened the door with his left hand, leaning onto the door frame with his right. Then as he eyed Chiyo, he simply stared at her and looked between her note and her face. And that smile.

And it encouraged him to make a reach for his own before he wrote and dangled it above her endearing her.

Are you mocking me, Miss Chiyo.

She looked positively hurt by his words.

"NO! I would never!" she instinctively tried saying to him, forgetting her current predicament. As she continued on with "How could you ever think-" she finally realized her futile efforts in verbally denying his claims and shut her mouth. Fervently, she withdrew her note and scrawled a larger-than-necessary "No! Never!". Silently huffing and nearly wanting to walk off, she stubbornly whipped her book in front of her to show him her words.

She would not leave unless this misunderstanding was cleared. Though... she did look like she was about to cry. Out of frustration, of course.

And maybe a little bit out of remorse, too. Really. To think she'd ever mock anybody! How rude! She was not mean by any means, and neither was she the type to pick on the mute!

Given her reaction, Caim was no fool and knew well enough he'd offended her. It wasn't intentional, admittedly. In fact, he even felt a little irritated with himself for not thinking sooner. She was sensitive, after all. It was almost as if he'd offended his own sister. Almost.

Except again, Chiyo seemed so much more delicate than Furiae. So it was worse than insulting the latter. It was as if he had physically struck her, which he couldn't ever imagine happening voluntarily.

I understand. Please calm yourself. It is not every day someone comes to met to tell me they have 'turned' mute.

His posture straightened and he stepped aside, in the event she wanted to come in. Poor thing was probably panicking, if he knew her at all.

Caim's note brought Chiyo's attention to her sudden flare in temper and she simmered down, feeling quite a bit ashamed for getting riled up so easily. That was strange. She found that she wouldn't ever feel that way, unless....

Oh god, the magic was beginning to wear off, wasn't it? Chiyo felt a sense of dread, another feeling she shouldn't be experiencing at that moment. Caim's sudden move off to the side didn't make her feel any better either. She really was panicking, but now for other reasons as well. For one, she should have seriously considered how he would have reacted to her note and thought three times more before writing it. Two, she should have eaten another candy before knocking on the door. Would the effects last long enough for her to do what she needed to do? She certainly didn't want to suddenly eat candy in front of him. What if he questioned its magic? She'd then have to tell him she believed that was what cursed her. Then he'd tell her to stop eating it and she just couldn't have that.

Also.... she's going to go into a full grown man's room. One that she called dashing and good looking at prom. Her heart picked up on speed and her face brought back that well-known blush she seemed to always be associated with. Dipping her head in both gratitude and apology, she wrote him a note (pausing for some time after her second sentence) before hesitantly stepping in.

I'm sorry for my behavior. I don't intend to mock you in any way and am sorry if it appeared that way. Thank you for allowing me into your room.

...Then she just stood in the middle of his room, feeling awkward and trying not to fidget. And, hey, what are those adorable paintings on the wall?

He closed the door after her, and after watching her stand around rather blankly, he pulled out the chair from his desk and offered it to her. Motioning with his right hand for her to sit, his lips parted and while he said nothing, he tried to enunciate to the best of his ability in his muted state.

Here.

Rather than sitting, however, he remained on his feet. And not one particularly good with small talk, Caim felt better about getting to the heart of the matter. After all, being rendered mute was a rather large ordeal. It hadn't been so much for him, but he'd also done so willingly - even without know the price he had to pay for his pact with Angelus.

Now then, please. Explain what happened. If you can.

And if he couldn't, well... He didn't know what they were going to do. Except get her an endless supply of writing pads and utensils.

Somehow, seeing Caim's lips part to enunciate was eye-catching and a sight to see for Chiyo. She had always been used to him keeping his lips sealed and writing down whatever he needed to say. So, seeing him mouth that one word was rather refreshing, though being told to sit also gave her a sense of foreboding. She quietly complied, moving to sit in the chair, and sobered up even more at his next request.

How should she answer? She didn't even 100 percent know the reason herself and felt like she'd be wasting his time if she only said that. He did write to explain if she could, but... the candy really was all that she could think of and plagued her mind as being the one responsible. She didn't want to chance him taking it away, but she also felt that he would probably be one of the only people who could help her in her situation. He would probably know more about muteness and its causes because, seriously, Chiyo believed the mute knew everything about being mute, okay?

She exhaled deeply. She really didn't plan things through at all. The only thing she thought of was to seek out someone who was in a similar position. That was all.

In all honesty, I don't know what exactly happened. I do think it could be related to magic...? Would you perhaps know about it? If using too much magic could cause a loss of speech?

Only when she thought she was vaguely at rest did he move to sit as well. And when he read what she had offered him, he had no immediate response for her. No. If anything, he had only thoughts. But Caim's mind was often so cluttered with them that it hardly seemed any different than usual. What else could be expected from a man who couldn't speak? What else could he really do?

More a rhetorical question than a literal one.

Glancing away from her, it made him think about the magic back in Midgard. Was there such a thing as too much? Of course there was. But it seemed hypocritical of him to even make mention of it, because admittedly, he had his own incentive to use it. Or had. Hard to do so without his sword.

I do not think so. Not a use of excess of it. A spell? Yes. A pact? Yes.

Is it possible that you caught the ire of a magic user here?

He didn't even really know they had any. He knew there was at least one person interested in magic, but that was completely different. But in the same respect, he had no way of sensing that kind of thing.

The ire of a magic user...? Seth, maybe? He was the provider of the magic candy, so surely that would make him a magic user as well, wouldn't it? Chiyo tried to think hard, but she couldn't imagine why Seth would be angry at her, so much so that he'd make her mute. Unless... the candy really does make a person mute after consuming in great amounts. They did have to be ingested orally, so there could possibly be a negative impact on the throat....

But then, why hadn't Seth mentioned that when he gave her the candy? That fact confused her greatly.

Nothing seemed to really make sense anymore.

I don't think I've caught the ire of a magic user... at least, not that I know of. She paused, wondering if she ought to confront Seth about the candy first before making any accusations or baseless claims regarding him. She decided to hold off on it and wrote down her next words carefully and slowly.

You mentioned spells. Is it possible to...
she paused again for a moment and blushed. No matter how she wrote it, it was going to sound ridiculous and she began to feel deeply embarrassed for writing it. But as she had already started, might as well complete it til the end. cast a spell on something one could consume? Often? I wondered if ingesting too much magic could cause one to go mute.

Perhaps like a side effect.
she added quickly, choosing not to write "as a price to pay for the benefits of magic" in order to see how he'd respond to the overall idea.

His writing was not immediate, mostly because he didn't really have that kind of knowledge. His mute status had nothing to do with something of that sort. His voice was the price he paid to stay alive essentially. The ability to speak seemed a very small thing to pay forward when it guaranteed his life. And made it more difficult to kill him the second time around. And gave him a dragon companion who could easily roast more Empire soldiers than a banquet could host a plethora of basted pigs.

I suppose it is a possibility. He paused momentarily and lifted one hand and shoulder in something of a casual shrug. Understand that my knowledge on magic is limited. I am no mage, Miss Chiyo. I am a swordsman, which but a few tricks up my very sleeves.

And that really was the truth of the matter. It certainly is not impossible. Although for inquiries of that nature, I might recommend seeking the assistance of someone who would know of those arts better. I can only instruct you in coping, not in the source or the cure.
