Dorm Log: Scorching Summer Edition

Who: Who else.
What: Dorm log!
Where: Student and Teacher dorms, and quite possibly beyond campus. Frankly? I don't care where. Go have fun, kids.
When: The span of June 14 - June 28th. Pick a date.
Warnings: Yeah, it got pretty naughty in here.

Ripped off the last one and all its friends: Basically, here's how this works. We all know our characters experience downtime after classes and their busy schedules, and this is a good venue for those kinds of miscellaneous dorm-shenanigans to take place. Not only does it give your characters the easy chance to meet new people in a laid-back environment, but it's a good mechanism for strengthening CR. It's easy!

Feel free to begin in any way you please! Plan with (a) fellow player(s) if you'd like! Or, set up a thread and wait for characters to bite! Whatever you want. It can all be yours if you make a thread. Stay up all night watching reruns of Teenage Mutant Ninja Squirtles? Break out the ice cream and industrial fans to beat the heat? Get a bad suntan while you're asleep with the help of your friends? Whatever you get your bad self up to. Your good self is welcome, too. Now put your copy of Animal Crossing: New Leaf down for one second and tag this thing!

[Another second of blank staring until he realizes what's going on, then he chuckles and waves a hand into his dorm and the multiplayer lobby menu on the screen.]

That's just "Frag Ops": It's a game I'm playing. I had no idea it was audible from the HALLWAY, but with the new speakers I guess that was an inevitability... Don't tell me you've never heard of anything like it, Ishimaru.

[He's pretty sure Eirika wouldn't have either. CALL IT A HUNCH.]
forgetbeam: (No Kyoudai das gay)

[Unfortunately for Eirika, he is way too much of a prude to be up for having cute girls rest their chins on his shoulder. He quite literally shrugs her off, giving her a kind of bewildered look before turning his attention back to Gordon. Mostly.

(His ears pinken ever-so-slightly for a moment because at the end of the day he is still a teenage boy, but that is the end of that.)]

I have... heard of video games, of course!

[Close enough, right?]

I was unaware that you played them...

[It's like everyone in the world must but him... But Eirika obviously didn't know what it was either.]

[Her posture straightens and she looks between the two, more or less clueless over the whole ordeal. She has no idea was a 'Frag Op' is or even what a 'video game' might be. And she considers asking, but the more she listens to the two, the more it seems likely she'll get her explanation without even having to request it.]

Perhaps you'd be willing to demonstrate, Doctor Freeman.

[Sounds like something Ishimaru may be interested in.]

You... want me to demonstrate? Well I, err... alright. C'mon in.

[Gordon's dorm is mostly what you'd expect from the man--islands of disorganized paper-strewn desks, cord-covered entertainment systems and other islands of messy productivity, isolated in a spartan emptiness that suggested he didn't bother with much of his living space if it didn't serve a purpose. The teacher himself sprawls onto overstuffed couch in front of the TV.]

For your benefit, Eirika, a video game is exactly what it sounds like: a game played over electronic equipment. The rules vary, but in all of them you use a controller or something to interact with the program. The games can be single-player, with an objective that the player has to accomplish in order to win, or multi-player, in which, uh... hey, Ishimaru. Catch.

[He tosses the player 2 controller to him.]

I could talk all day, but you wanted a demonstration, right?
forgetbeam: (This is public indecency sir)

[personal profile] forgetbeam 2013-06-17 04:22 pm (UTC)(link)
[It is a pretty impressive catch! Impressive in that as much fumbling as he does, he manages to steady it in his hands instead of dropping it. Not too bad for being completely caught off-guard, but what is he supposed to do with it now? This thing has more buttons and knobs than he has the fingers for.

He looks from the controller, to Eirika, to Gordon, looking a little horrified once he realizes what's going on. He's all for teaching other people how to do things, but...]

Hold on! I have never played anything like this before, either! You will have to teach both of us!
heartofarapier: ([coy] akin to clever)

[personal profile] heartofarapier 2013-06-18 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[She nods as she listens to Gordon, but her gaze seems pretty stuck on how he has his quarters set up. She's never denied having curiosity. In fact, sometimes that curiosity has gotten the better of her.

When Gordon gives a controller to Ishimaru, her eyes return to the two and she looks between the two. Then she gives a smile to the boy and nods encouragingly. Well. She hopes it's encouraging.]

I believe you're going to learn by doing. Chin up, now. Just do your best.

[Lacing her hands together, her head tips and she looks over to Gordon.]

Consider us both attentive and ready to learn.

[He gestures to Ishimaru, inviting him to sit, and raises his own controller to indicate buttons.] This is shoot, this is secondary weapon, jump, crouch, change weapon, throw a grenade... I'll give you a couple minutes to get used to the controls.

[A quick fiddling of game menus and the split-screen shows a multiplayer arena.]

The objective here is easy; kill me more times than I kill you.
forgetbeam: (The hearts we break)

[personal profile] forgetbeam 2013-06-23 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Of course I'm going to do my best!

[Yeah, that kind of encouragement is just what he needs to ease into the whole thing! He takes a seat, experimentally pushing at buttons and watching the guy on what he assumes to be his half of the screen respond. And then he managed to blow himself up the end. Of course, he stops once Gordon mentions the objective, looking down at the controller like it's turned into something poisonous.]

What kind of objective is that!? That's... meant to be fun? What happens to the culprit afterward?
trustycrowbar: (Smarmy phase shift)

(Quick response to Ishimaru before Eirika)

[personal profile] trustycrowbar 2013-06-23 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[Gordon is trying very hard not to let up a laugh as Ishimaru screws around in the game and ultimately explodes. It takes another swig of his beer to properly keep it weighed down.]

[The last question earns an eyebrow-raising side glance, however.]

It's a game about war. Usually in a situation like that the "culprit" is given a medal. In this case, you merely win the round.
heartofarapier: ([wistful] akin to support)

[personal profile] heartofarapier 2013-06-26 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
[Her attention turns when she hears Gordon's explanation. And for many moments, she simply stares.

A game about war. It sits with her poorly. Why should war be made into a game? In war, people die. Not just soldiers. Women and children, too. Innocent people. Who in the world has thought it a good idea to simplify the idea of something so inspiring and full of sacrifice?

She tries not to look too disconcerted by the discovery.]

Then you kill people in it. [An observation. Direct and to the point, too.]
forgetbeam: (WHAT DO YOU MEAN I ONLY GOT 99%)

[personal profile] forgetbeam 2013-06-27 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Well... It is only fictional...

[Still, he's seen way too much death for it to sit comfortably with him. Unlike Eirika, Kiyotaka hasn't experienced all-out war, and so he's able to disconnect the game from his own experiences at Hope's Peak Academy and even the more recent debacle out in Final Destination City.

Besides, if video games are one of the major ways to connect and have fun with other people, he'll put his own hang-ups aside and go through with it, damn it!]

Alright! Then let us play!!

[This time he actually does manage to have his avatar lob a grenade at his own feet. Good work. LOOK AT THOSE RAGDOLL PHYSICS.]

What-?!
