Pokemon! Genie! Kanto? It's a thing that's happening!

The train ride from FDC was always pretty pleasant. The scenery was nice and it was a fairly long ride which allowed time for both gazing out the window at things flying by and also napping. Sonny, of course, insisted it was his treat whenever the snack trolley rolled past. The snack lady on the train had never made so much in one shift before...

...anyway. Kanto in Summertime is a wonderful place. The sun is shining, the Pidgey are Shin--er, singing, the Rattata are looking at their masses of squabbling children and regretting each and every life choice that led them to this moment. Today, they are joined by a portly, young, blue haired gentleman and his beautiful purple haired companion who just so happens to be a Genie.

"So! This is Pallet!" he said, turning to her and grinning. "I know it doesn't look like much, but it's a great place!"

"...We HAVE to fight?" Shantae asked. "What kind of ridiculous rule is that?" she asked, gesturing back at the biker, whose frightening air started to give way to confusion.

"Uh, that's just how things work?" he asked, scratching his head.

Shantae sighed, rubbing her temple. "I'm too tired from flying all this way, so if we have to fight, you can do it."

"OK! Don't worry, you'll get a chance, I promise!" Sonny replied before turning into a Snorlax and probably terrifying the pee right out of Biker Guy... whatever his name is.

"LAAAX!"

Bring forth your Koffing, O' Biker. Give to me your Muk. Or is it a Mankey you're about to offer?

"All right, now that's more like it!" the biker responded, a bit confused, but at least happy now that he was getting the fight he wanted. He whipped his Pokeball out, and out came...

"Jigglypuff!" the little pink orb announced.

Shantae stared, blinked, and pointed. "...What the hell is that supposed to be?"

"HEY!" The biker shouted. "My little Princess is not a THAT! She's a lady!" The Jigglypuff puffed up, pouting at Shantae's assessment.

Ahh, Jigglypuff. One of only several Pokémon who were rounder than Sonny Moe.

"Laaaax!"

Hi, Jigglypuff! I hope you're ready!

"Uh... Okay then," Shantae said, shrugging. This world was getting weirder by the minute... "Sonny, uh... Crunch!"

"Princess, Sing!" the biker ordered in response.

Sonny went for the kill... uh... the faint immediately, leaning down to clamp on to the Jigglypuff with his jaws.

Unfortunately, the balloon Pokémon was able to dodge the attack! Her music filled the air and instead of crashing down to crunh, Sonny crashed down to... well... crash.

"Laaaaxxx...."

Did... Did he just fall asleep...? In the middle of a battle?!

"WHAT THE HELL, SONNY! GET UP!" she shouted angrily at the sleeping mountain of bear.

"Aha! Now, Princess, use Pound!" the biker ordered triumphantly, as the Jigglypuff leaped up and started to punch at the slumbering Sonny.

Sonny was seemingly fine with this, snoring loudly with a happy smile on his face. He was dreaming about eating a giant pink marshmallow. Mmm...

The Pound knocked his head around on whatever neck he had, but he continued to snore entirely peacefully. If it even hurt, he showed not the slightest sign of it.

This was looking... Weird. A little marshmallow creature smacking around a giant sleeping bear. Shantae slapped her face, dragging her fingers down. "This isn't another stupid rule of this world, is it?" she muttered. "Because I don't think I can take much more of this..."

Sonny rolled over and snored super loudly, narrowly missing squashing the Jiggly little Princess into so much Marshmallow Fluff.

"Laaax... lax lax..... sno'..."

I'm going to eat you, giant pink candy. I'm going to eat you so good...

Hey, Shantae, at least he seemed happy, right?

Yeah, but the longer he slept, the more chance those Team Rocket punks had to escape with the baby Pokemon. Shantae sighed, rubbing her forehead.

"Hey, you!" she called out to the biker. "How the heck am I supposed to wake up my buddy here?" she asked.

"What?" he asked, blinking in confusion.

"I don't know how this Pokemon battling stuff works, so what am I supposed to do now?"

"You don't have an Awakening?"

"What the heck's an Awakening?"

"Um... If you just wait a while, he'll wake up on his own...?"

Shantae sighed again. "Great..."

Suddenly! A yawn!

Sonny sat up, rubbing the sleep from his eyes with big, balled up paws. He smacked his lips and turned to grin at Shantae.

"Lax."

Good morning!

Whatever attacks had landed during his slumber hadn't seemed to affect him much. As he remembered, most of the trainers who hung out here were kind of low level. He rolled up onto his hind feet and stretched his back, looking entirely unconcerned.

Shantae, however, was unimpressed. Hands on her hips, she glared a bit at him. "Yeah, yeah. Good morning. Now will you PLEASE use Crunch on that--"

"Her name is Princess!"

"--princess there?"

"Lax lax."

Good morning, Princess!

CHOMP!!

This time, the Crunch attack didn't land astray and instead squished the Jigglypuff fairly solidly, knocking it out instantly.

"That's more like it!" Shantae grinned triumphantly.

"My Princess!" the biker cried out, running out to scoop up his Jigglypuff. He quickly slapped some money in Shantae's hand, and bolted with his precious little lady.

Shantae turned to Sonny, hands back on her hips. "So wanna explain why you took a nap in the middle of the fight there?" she asked.

Sonny changed back into a person and yawned loudly.

"Oh, of course - probably, you wouldn't know!" he said, arching his back backwards and stretching his arms as though he'd just woken from a particularly good doze. "When Princess sang that song? It's not just a pretty tune. It's actually a move called Sing. It puts opposing Pokémon to sleep. It's hard to avoid it and I've never had much luck staying awake through it, but I promise it's not because I just decided to take a snooze! I really truly had no choice."

"Uh huh," Shantae said. "You know, if that's going to be a thing, maybe you should give me a quick primer on what other things I should be expecting," she added.

"Weeeell, there's also paralysis. I might get paralyzed by spores or electricity? That just means I move slower and sometimes I miss doing a move because of it. It's a bummer, but you can still come back from it. Being frozen is one that you know pretty well because I did it to you that one time! Ice type moves usually come with a chance of freezing an opponent. I could get burned, meaning that I'm slowly hurt by a really bad burn because of fire. If it's bad enough and stays long enough, then I can faint from that. There's also poison! It's hard to poison a Snorlax, but it could be done. Again, I can faint from that if it stays too long without getting fixed."

The accumulated status condition information of a Champion Trainer's Pokémon, Shantae. People would probably pay thousands of Pokéyen for this information.

Shantae was quiet for a few moments after hearing his explanation. "...You know what, I don't think I want to do the fighting," she admitted.

"Oh? Well, alright - if you're really sure? I just know you like to fight so I thought it could be fun for you! I don't mind doing it all if you want me to."

He grinned at her.

"You know what's funny? I already have a trainer and everything and really, technically, you don't have any badges so normally a high level Pokémon like me proooobably wouldn't obey you much. But you're getting a kind of interesting experience. You're a novice trainer out in the world with her starter Pokémon about to take on an evil organization to save lives. Exciting, right?"

"Yeah, I just don't wanna have to remember all those rules from your side of it," she explained. "I love fighting, but more... freestyle."

She nodded. "I do love taking out evil organizations to save lives," she said. "So hey, this should at least be fun! C'mon, speaking of which, we need to keep flying!"

She stepped back, dancing again to transform into a harpy, flapping her wings to get airborne.

Sonny ran over, mentally preparing himself to be grabbed by the shoulders again.

"Ready when you are, Shantae!!"

Okay. She could do this. She swooped down, taking hold of his shoulders and lifting him off again, flapping her way over the ocean again. She could only hope that this wouldn't be QUITE as long of a trip as last time...

"You can do it, Shantae!" Sonny called, doing his best to be encouraging. "I'll buy you the biggest dinner you've ever seen!"

Encouragement! Hell yeah!!

She kept flying for as long as her wings could hold out, and perhaps a little longer. It couldn't be much longer. Just a little more...

She never felt so happy to see city lights in all her life when they started to pop into view like fireflies. "Is that it?" she asked, audibly exhausted, but hanging in there for his sake.
