"Yeah. Got t'pick up some finishing nails for class and some stuff to repair Hagakure's chicken run."

Repair being a term used loosely - he often messed with it just to mess with it. A project was only interesting when you were doing something with it, after all.

"You too, huh?" he asked. She was in Engineering, wasn't she?

Ronnae smiled sheepishly and shrugged, "Partly. Both for class and for personal projects. So many things here that are odd and new and I want to see what I can introduce into my teaching." And what she can use to further her own inventions.

"How are you enjoying the vacation?"

"I guess Hagakure's chicken coop has turned into a personal project for me, so, I'm doin' roughly the same."

It had STARTED as a class project. However. The chickens were here to stay.

At her question though, he had to think about it a bit. He didn't really 'enjoy' the vacation so much as he survived it. One day at a time, dealing with the crazy things that happened at this school. Like random showers of exploding birds and finding half rattlesnake half coyote puppies.

"It's been alright. Beach was nice."

Ronnae smiled. "It really was. It's a nice beach, makes me miss the ones from back home." Like in Stranglethorn or the one near Quel'thalas.

"With school starting, it'll be less likely to visit places like that." Save for maybe school trips. "But I'm also looking forward to the classes and students."

"Well, there's weekends and breaks inbetween terms and what have ya." Joel commented. "You can always go to the beach then, I figure. Though, it snows here in th' winter time so it may not be the most hospitable place, year 'round."

He wasn't much of a beach person himself.

"I prefer the woods. Shame we went and lost most of 'em."

"Lost them? What do you mean?" Ronnae asked curiously.

"As in the woods around here or back, well, I don't want to assume but maybe you're not from here either?" She could could never quite tell with humans. Or well... considering this place, probably wouldn't be able to tell for sure with anyone really.

"No, I ain't from here. But I was talkin' about the woods out back of the school. We had an... accident back there that wound up destroying a huge hunk of them. You've probably seen that massive crater in back of the school grounds?"

The subspace bomb, which had taken away something like seventy percent of the woodland back there. Including the area of the forest he'd wandered in through.

"That all used to be woods."

"Oh! I thought... I thought that was just part of the ecosystem..." You have to forgive her Joel, she's from a world, and has visited worlds, where sometimes the ecosystems make little to no sense to normal folk.

"Wow... Has anyone tried to replant the area? Or is there something preventing it?"

"I think there was some talk about it at one point, but we've been sort've busy." he replied with a small shrug. "That happened in the middle of the shadow bug hoopla, then there was the floating island above, attacking Eggman's airship, then the Earthquakes started durin' Prom season..."

Really, he could see why people hadn't gotten to it. His own interest was limited - he doubted filling the crater with trees would bring back whatever pathway he'd used to wander into this world.

"Maybe once things settle down durin' the school year, some folks can get on it. We got the Greenhouse, so, no shortage of places to sprout seedlings to take on down."

Ronnae crossed her arms, leaning to one side and sighing. "This feels more like home the more I learn about all that goes on. Seems like something's always looking to cause trouble..."

And that was something that she'd have to keep an eye for because even though this was another world, she still believed in protecting others.

"Sure. But trust me, it's better'n some worlds you could have wound up in. The trouble here's a whole different level of strange compared to where I'm from... but it's manageable."

Assuming she'd come here by accident as opposed to arriving by choice.

"Definitely seemingly much easier to handle than where I'm from... For sure..." Because she'd hate that the fate that often befalls on Azeroth if it came here... This place doesn't deserve that pain.

Shaking her head, she offered an awkward, timid smile. "But... t-that's not the most pleasant of subjects right?"

"Hmph. I expect you're right." he replied, scratching at his beard and looking sheepish. "...my bad."

Conversation was never really his forte.

Ronnae shifted in place a bit uncomfortably. She hadn't wanted to just shut down the conversation alltogether, she just wanted a change of subject...

"S-sorry..." she voiced in a soft tone.

For a few moments she wondered if it was best to just walk away right now.

"W-well... if you ever need any help, you know, with shop or whatever. I'm available." Hurray for social awkwards!

Onward awkward soldiers.

"Oh. Uh. Sure." he replied with a nod and a shrug, feeling really weird. Had he cut off the conversation? Probably. But he'd been trying to abide by her suggestion that the conversation wasn't pleasant. He could have continued, of course. 'No, I'm serious. In my world, more people want to shoot you to steal your shoes than don't, and that's if a clicker doesn't get you. Hope you're good at making shivs.'

Not the best way to try and be... friendly.

"Much obliged you stopped by to say Hello, Ma'am."

"Of course." she replied a bit more at ease.

"If you'd like company too, that'd be alright too, I mean, we seem to be shopping for similar items..." Sans the clothing...

"...I mean, if you got nothin' better to do." Joel replied after a silence.

"I'm not... uh. Not real good at conversation and whatnot. Gettin' better. But where I'm from, I never did a whole lot of conversating. I'm not even totally sure that's a word." That's how bad at this he was.

"At least for a bit would be fine... I... I'm not all that good at it either I'm afraid." at least not until there was some sort of trust there, and even then, it just eased things a little bit.

Great. So neither one of them was a good conversationalist. That was encouraging on one hand (At least they were in the same boat.) and discouraging on the other (Because that boat was going to be quiet and awkward as shit.) but it was what they had to work with.

"So. Uh... what're your view on proprietary bolts? Ones you need a special wrench for? Worth th' hassle?"

They tended to be made of high quality materials to justify their own existence but damn were they a pain if you didn't have the right kind of wrench.

This is a normal person conversation topic. I'm pretty damn sure it is, anyway.

"Depends, everything usually has it place and if it doesn't, you make it." At least Goblins and Gnomes would say so. They'd make something work no matter what. Now whether it worked well was another story.

She did smile a little, this was much easier than talking about normal stuff.

"I can get behind that. I spent a lot of years makin' things work that normally wouldn't. Weapon modification, mostly. Small arms."

He hadn't yet met a weapon that he couldn't improve.

"Really? Oh you'll have to show me then!" Because she loved the hell out of making weapons too. She actually used a lot of her creations and implemented them in her style.

"You got an interest in that, huh? Guess it makes sense. Engineering and all. Sure. I can show you what I've put together since arrivin'." he said. "It's back at my dorm, o'course."

"I deal in a lot of weapons in my profession... Well, mainly since there's always a war back home." Which wasn't the best description but there was very little denying that there really was a constant string of wars on Azeroth.

"I hear you. Kind of the same where I'm from. Couple that with not bein' allowed to move around too much or transport goods, and you figure out real quick that jury-riggin' is the best way to get the most out of the few weapons you can find."
