Dorm Log: School's in session

Who: All of Smash.
What: Dorm log! September edition.
Where: Student and Teacher dorms, and quite possibly beyond campus.
When: The span of September 15th - 30th.
Warnings: HAHAHAHAHA.

Ripped off the last one and all its friends: Basically, here's how this works. We all know our characters experience downtime after classes and their busy schedules, and this is a good venue for those kinds of miscellaneous dorm-shenanigans to take place. Not only does it give your characters the easy chance to meet new people in a laid-back environment, but it's a good mechanism for strengthening CR. It's easy!

Feel free to begin in any way you please! Plan with (a) fellow player(s) if you'd like! Or, set up a thread and wait for characters to bite! Just add a thread with the room number (and date/time, if it matters) and the characters that reside there (just for reference!). You do not have to use one character's thread as a dual-purpose for both characters if you do not want to. Doesn't have to be a dorm room, either, if you have something else in mind. It could be the common room or the student science lab or wherever. So how's that first week of school been treating you? How big's your pile of homework? Sure, you could be doing that. But why do that when you could decimate your friendships by playing a round of Giana Party 4? Host a girl's-only slumber party! Spy on a girl's-only slumber party! Dare someone to spend the night in the haunted dorm! Slip a (fake) love letter beneath that special someone's door! Etcetera, etcetera... I'm sure you can think of something to get your bad self up to.

"I don't see the problem. Death's a natural part of life: you can't have one without the other."

"I died a week ago. It wasn't very nice."

[cruelcurse]

"Wow, really?!" exclaimed Henry, jolting up from the bed. "Hmmm... You don't look very dead to me. Oooh, you must be a zombie~ That's pretty neat, ahaha~"

Somehow, Henry wasn't sure if Jock was telling the truth. About dying. Really, really dying. When people died, they don't just come back unless they're a mindless husk of their former self - as far as Henry knew, anyway.

"..."

"I was in one of those ball-things. So there was a fake me running around that I was inside of when I was killed."

[cruelcurse]

Ball-things. A fake "him". Henry didn't know what to make of any of this because he didn't even watch the TV and just flat-out never got the news when it came out. He just did the honor of killing things.

"So you were in a ball-thing and then you died," said Henry, like he was making the sorriest attempt in the world at understanding things. "Buuuut, POOF! You're here again. So... what did death feel like to you?"

[flamejock]

"Bad. It hurt. My mom had to kill me with rocks and earthquakes. I was scared and wanted to throw up because I hated myself," mumbled Jock.

[cruelcurse]

"Awww. That doesn't sound like any fun." He sat back on his mattress again and crossed his legs on its surface. At least the death could have been fun, right. Right.

"I bet that was hard for her to kill you. Especially to witness it, and to know that it hurt somebody you cared about. Too bad, huh~?" Henry meant what he said, but talking so openly about it made it sound like villainous taunting.

Jock glared at Henry from across the room. "You're mean, and I don't like you."

[cruelcurse]

Henry stayed quiet for a moment.

"Huh? Where'd that come from?"

[flamejock]

"You're making fun of me when I'm trying to tell you important things."

[cruelcurse]

"Since when was I making fun of you? I was saying it must have been a hard thing to go through," he said, still smiling. "For both you and your mom."

[flamejock]

"You're talking all nice and sweet when I'm telling you sad things. That's what you do when you make fun of someone."

[cruelcurse]

"I always sound like this when I talk," he explained. "How should I do it differently? Ooh, I got an idea: I'll let you talk, and I'll quietly listen when you're telling me sad things. How's that? I'd still like to help, honest!"

He clutched his hands together in front of his chest like he was pleading.

[flamejock]

"You're still making fun of me. I don't want you to be my roommate anymore; I want Blake to be my roommate again, not you."

[cruelcurse]

Ouch. Rejection always hurt somehow. Henry sighed.

"I'm just trying to help," he mumbled, but he wasn't sure what face would best portray the feelings he was having. So he kept smiling. "I'm not very good at doing the mood thing, you see."

"You're bad at moods," Jock said. "Why don't you know how to show emotions?"

I take pride in that

[cruelcurse]

"I dunno," he answered. He tried hard to figure out what Olivia would say to him about his lack of expression, but the situation felt so difficult suddenly. Talking about more personal matters always made him feel uneasy to some extent. "Sometimes I just try to do something that I think is nice and helpful, but it never works out that way. I must have bad luck~"

"Nice and helpful isn't smiling at people who are having problems. You need to look sad, too, so people know that you can feel their problems. Everybody knows that. Even a little baby Growlithe knows that."

"But if I smile, then maybe you'll smile back! And if I look pained, then you might just get even sadder..." He sighed. "I guess I was wrong about that, but I thought it would work..."

[flamejock]

"Did nobody teach you what empathy is?" he asked. "Feeling what other people can feel, or at least trying. Even little puppies know that if somebody is sad you let them know you feel sad, too and you're concerned for them."

[cruelcurse]

"I know what empathy is. My face doesn't show it well, but I know what it means. Umm, let me make a sad face...?"

He... tried. He just grit his teeth together and smiled a smile that he thought was a frown but it was not. It was best described from a regular perspective as a sheepish grin. It looked plain unnatural on him, regardless.

"But, does my expression reflect what I'm feeling inside, really~? I've gathered I'm not the best at making faces, but I still feel stuff."

[flamejock]

"You're still smiling. Is that supposed to be a frown? Why can't you frown?"

[cruelcurse]

"Facial expressions aren't my forte," he answered simply. "That's what I've been saying all along."

[flamejock]

"Yeah, whatever," said Jock. "I'm going to mom's room. I'm tired of talking to you. You don't make any sense."

Jock got off of his bed and walked to the door.

[cruelcurse]

He thought about protesting just to keep him from leaving him, but that wasn't much help either. So he watched him head for the door, puzzled.
