[Open Log] Ch-Ch-Cherry Blossoms

Who: You!
What: Cherry Blossom Festival
When: April 10th - 18th
Where: All over town & campus. Wherever you find a cherry tree. Probably even up there on that mystery island for whatever reason, if you're so inclined.
Rating: Flower power.

Pink is everywhere. No matter where you look, you're sure to see the signs of soft pink and white blossoms. There's a fresh spark of life filling the air and just beckoning for everyone to come outside and enjoy the sweet scents of spring. Well, except for you, people with springtime allergies. They just want to make you miserable. But perhaps for everyone else, it was a wonderful amazing time to be had.

There are wonderful spots for picnicking! Frolic inducing atmosphere and the space to do it! Every so often you will see vendors selling treats for the event! Cosplayers taking advantage of their natural environments for photo ops! Hot date spots! Blossoms! Sparkles! Everywhere! Even when it rains.

This log is completely open! You can do whatever you'd like with whomever you'd like whenever you'd like. Just start up a thread and go!

Have fun! Don't forget to add your character to the entry tags! ♥

"I dunno, I like to encourage 'em for tryin' hard. I probably give out more Bs than anything else but I always got some As in there, too."

Max took the time to shove three more sticks into his mouth and bite the meat off of all of them at once. He wasn't as good at eating as a snorlax, but it was a fair substitution.

Joel, conversely, was being a normal human being and eating his one at a time, taking several bites from each.

"I don't know. I don't like givin' grades for effort. Effort is like... it's like the price of entry, you know? Effort's what gets your foot in the door. Everythin' else has to be skill."

Excuse him, Max. He's a terrible person. And bitter. And terrible.

"Yeah but some kids'll never have any skill no matter how much time you spend on 'em. If they're at least tryin' I don't like to see 'em fail. I mean, I failed physics like twice. I got a C in the end but a lotta guys woulda got discouraged and dropped out. I still don't know how I got that C. Numbers ain't my friends."

He shoved another three sticks into his mouth. "Unnnlssss itzz frrrr wrkuuuts," he mumbled through his chickeny mouthful.

"Well, OK. I can see that in some classes. Fact is, I don't want shoddy workmanship gettin' my seal of approval. If I give a kid A for effort and he winds up goin' out and building things that are unsafe, that's on me. I ain't ready to take responsibility for that."

Your class was already unsafe, Max.

Max swallowed all of the piece of chicken he had been masticating. "I ain't givin' As for effort. As are for kids who do well. I'm talkin' about that kid who tries his heart out and you give him a C minus 'cause he did his best."

"C is still a pass." Joel pointed out, eating the rest of his skewer and placing the stick in the trash. "If the birdhouse ain't somethin' a bird's going t'survive living in, kid ain't getting a pass."

"Birds live in balls made outta sticks and mud," said Max. "That's a pretty low bar to pass."

[personal profile] golonghorns 2015-05-02 05:42 am (UTC)(link)
"It was just an example, smartass." Joel replied, finally starting on his second (2) chicken skewer. "I just meant, if it looks like it's going t'fall apart in a high wind, the kid doesn't pass."

"Listen, I know the difference between good product and bad product. I didn't study to be a journeyman blacksmith for like three years and not learn that. Not everybody's cut out to do... buildin' stuff. I mean, if they're that bad, get 'em out of the class instead of givin' em an F on their report card, yeah?"

[personal profile] golonghorns 2015-05-03 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
"They took the class." Joel replied. "That's a commitment. They either get better or they fail. I'm willin' to work with them, you understand. It's not like I ain't willing to put in the time. But I got standards."

Max shoved more chicken into his mouth and chewed for a few moments. This conversation was going in pointless circles. He was going to have to do something to change the topic.

"You lift?" he asked.
golonghorns: (Yeah ok I'm listening)

Because you're Wrong, Max. That's why. And it's important you understand that you're Wrong and that Joel is Right. This is crucial. Because Joel is simply a terrible friend that way.

"A little. Ain't as physical as I was once, but I try to stay in shape. Never know when you're going t'need it."

"Just 'cause you're older than you used to be don't mean you can't get swole," said the swolest man in the tri-county area. "If you want help figurin' out a plan, you know who to look for."

"Mostly I just go to the gym when I have some free time." Joel replied. "Or when I'm feelin' restless, early in the mornings."

He'd used to fill that time with wandering around in the woods, trying to find his way back. Then the woods became a huge hole in the ground and his hopes of returning the way he came also became a big hole in the ground. But he still woke up at like four A.M. every day anyway.

"Well, if you want somethin' more structured, I can put somethin' together for you. A three-day-a-week, four-day-a-week sorta thing, dependin' on what you're lookin' for."

Joel looked like a 5x5 Stronglifts sort of a man. Max hoped that he was a 5x5 Stronglifts sort of a man. That was a good, solid program.

"You look like a 5x5 Stronglifts sort of a guy to me," said Max, as if that meant anything to anyone who wasn't Max.
golonghorns: (Yeah ok I'm listening)

[personal profile] golonghorns 2015-05-13 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
"....a what, now?" Joel asked. Because he was not Max.

"5x5 Stronglifts," said Max. "It's a two-day cycle program where you work out three days a week. Squats every day, bench and barbell rows on day one, overhead press and deads on day two, then back to day one. Next week, you start on day two. You try to do five sets of five reps at half your max weight range for all of the lifts except the deads, which you only do one set of."

Oh, how easygoing.

"It's a full body workout." That's very important. "It hits all the major muscle groups." Extremely important. "Compound lifts over machines." Most important.

"Woah, easy there, Hoss...." Joel said, blinking in something nearing amazement. "That just sounds way too complicated for a guy who just likes to come into the gym for an hour or so every so often to do whatever."

No wonder Max was the size of a tanker truck.

"It's a three-day-a-week program," said Max. "That's hardly anything at all. Only like an hour at a time. You just go in with a plan for those three days."

Wouldn't it be a better world if everyone could be the size of a tanker truck? Wouldn't it, Joel?

"Sounds more reasonable when you put it that way."

Small, easily digested lumps of information, Max. Small, easily digestible lumps. That's the key to people not thinking you're crazy. Or one of the keys. You probably need several more. (Like not being crazy. That could be one you could work on.)
