SUDDENLY, AND WITHOUT WARNING...



The entire school has become covered in mistletoe overnight. It grows out of the walls! The ceilings! Everywhere you least expect it? HOW CAN THIS BE??

It's probably best not to think about it. Attempts to uproot the plants or burn them away only makes the plants grow back faster. For the time being, it seems the school must live with it.

That was probably the most he'd ever heard her say in one conversation. And to be fair, it was a lot to take in. He'd seen Sonic through her eyes and knew her feelings for him at that time... and apparently they hadn't changed much. It was something he'd process on his own time.

He reached over and took up her hand, giving it a squeeze.

"I.. ah. I appreciate the honesty, Luv." he said once he was absolutely sure he could unzip his lips. And he did appreciate it. But how did he FEEL about what she'd said? That was a Gordian knot he was probably going to take a while to work through. He wasn't lying when he said he'd never been great at dealing with his own emotions. Even the discipline of the Martial Arts could only take him so far.

"You're right. I've feelings for you. Quite strong ones. I have for some time. You're.... You're a wonderful person and my life feels richer for having you in it, for what that's worth." he said, offering her a sheepish smile. Or as sheepish as his wolfish face would allow. "Neither one of us is really good with this sort of talk and so it's probably overdue, I'd wager."

He looked away for a moment, gathering his thoughts. He wasn't sure what to say. What to do. She'd explained her relationship to Sonic... he should probably do the same.

"Riwane is a free spirit. She's a couple of lads she's very close to and I don't question what goes on, there. I don't. I'm not jealous or possessive with her because that's not... It wouldn't be right in her regard. I'm her trainer and we have a very close bond, but it's also a very open thing. As for Felicia, that's a bridge I burned long ago. That's not to say I don't feel for them. So, I know what it is to have something of a divided heart."

He shifted a little uncomfortably. So... where did that exactly leave them?

Blaze squeezed his larger hand back when he finished, and nodded in understanding. "My heart doesn't know what it wants, or what it should have," she told him quietly. "This is something I need to think about myself. I'm sorry I can't give you a better answer than that."

She reached up to cup his cheek, tilting his head down. Then, she sat up, pulling his face closer to give him a soft kiss on his lips. She held it there, closing her eyes. And when she finally let go, she said, "I care about you, Jon. And I'm sorry."

He closed his eyes and let their lips linger on one another. Well. This was what he'd asked for, wasn't it? There were no cupid bots around. Months too early for those. And the mistletoe overhead had already been rendered null and void. And yet, here they were, kissing.

How could he feel so great about that and so dour at the same time? It was like his heart had taken wing, sung a single joyous note and then gone ahead and rammed itself headfirst into a window.

When she drew back, he opened his eyes and looked at her.

"I'm sorry too, Blaze. I very much am."

Though....

"...no matter what might be between us, we ought to at least promise to remain friends. Because matters of the heart aside, I meant what I said. My life is vastly better for your presence in it. I'd not want to lose that."

She nodded. "On that at the very least we're in total agreement," she said. "You're a very dear friend to me. And no matter what happens, I don't want to lose the friendship we have." She squeezed his hand tighter. "I promise that I won't stop being your friend, so long as you'll have me."

"You've my word, I'll always be your friend and ally, likewise." he replied, squeezing her hand back. It wasn't exactly a hand shake, but he didn't think they needed it. Her word was as good as gospel, so far as he was concerned.

"...I'm glad the mistletoe caught me, today."

Because as much as things might be confusing and a little painful? They'd been honest with one another, and that went a long way.

"...Me too," she admitted. "I'm just sorry it's taken me this long to say anything to you... I guess I was afraid of losing your friendship. And I don't think I could've handled that."

[whirlwind_wolfman]

"I'm glad, then, that we've cleared up that misconception. It's a done deal now - you can't lose it. You're stuck with me, in fact."

He offered her a smile. It wasn't his strongest, but it was genuine.

"Honesty isn't always easy, but it's also a two way street. It isn't as though I've been an open book either. We'll try and do better with that, both of us, I'm sure."

She couldn't help a small smirk at his comment. "Somehow I'll manage," she teased.

With a nod, she added, "Agreed. And it goes both ways. If you need to talk about anything... I'm here."

"Perfect."

He gave her hand one last gentle squeeze before letting go. Reluctantly, but he didn't want to belabor the moment. They were both smiling right now. That was probably better than he could have expected, considering the conversation.

"I probably ought to let you get on about your day, eh?"

"Ah, I suppose so," she said, getting to her feet. "Don't need to sit here on the floor all day... I'll see you again soon, yes?" she asked hopefully.

"I'd be disappointed, were it any other way." he replied. "If you need me - for anything - you know where to find me."
