SUDDENLY, AND WITHOUT WARNING...

The entire school has become covered in mistletoe overnight. It grows out of the walls! The ceilings! Everywhere you least expect it? HOW CAN THIS BE??

It's probably best not to think about it. Attempts to uproot the plants or burn them away only makes the plants grow back faster. For the time being, it seems the school must live with it.

She nodded as she heard him, thinking she'd heard the exact same words a year ago, two years ago, three years ago, and so on and so forth. Basically, perhaps for five years she'd heard it. Around there. Never mind the time off she took away from the academy and from Knuckles.

"I can do that," she reassured him with a smile. "You have no need to sell me on it. I already know what you're capable of. I wouldn't have asked if I hadn't known."

"Oh! Heh. Sorry... force of habit, I guess."

Hey, he wasn't to know what Other Him had said about everything. He could probably make a pretty good guess, but he wouldn't know for sure.

"What else did He used to help you with?"

She shook her head at him, not at all turned by his need for reassurance. She liked him as he was and that was all she personally needed to know.

Voile quieted as she thought about her history with Knuckles. Truth be told, the echidna had always made himself available for her. If she needed him, and most of the time she'd been too independent. But he'd been her support through a variety of sorrows and losses.

"Hm... Once there was a blackout. A couple of years ago. The entire ground of the academy lost power and he called me, came to my room, and kept me company until I fell asleep." She chortled as she continued. "Basically, any time I needed him he was there. He was a good friend and incredibly reliable. So I know that you will be both a good friend and incredibly reliable."

"Really? Wow. That's real nice of him. I mean, I'd do the same thing, if you wanted me to. I don't mind the dark - Comes from diggin' around in caves and old ruins, I guess. At least there's no ghosts, here!"

...he had yet to learn about ghost Pokémon.

Even as she heard him, she couldn't stop herself from giving a sly smile. He really didn't know in the slightest. And in that respect, she was a bit relieved for once that he wasn't the echidna from before. Otherwise, he would have taken one look at her and Warren and quickly stomped his foot down.

Not that she would have listened, of course.

"Untrue," she corrected him gently. "The drama instructor is an apparition of some form. Madame Flurrie is her name. I like her, though. And one of the... students is a ghost as well. He is fine as well." An outright lie, sort of. A lie to anyone else, but nothing short of the truth to her.

"....oh."

That idea was going to take a little getting used to, frankly. Ghosts, where he was from, never meant anything good.

"Well. If you're OK with 'em, that's.... fine. I mean, it's fine. I'll be fine."

Ghosts. Why'd it have to be ghosts?

She chortled softly and shook her head at him. "Don't worry, Knuckles. I won't let anything happen to you. As long as you don't do anything idiotic, chances are I'll be able to talk—" Manipulate. "—you out of any trouble you might get yourself into. Oddly enough, I'm good at doing things like that."

It must have been that empathic and telepathic charm of hers.

Must have been.

"Good, because where I'm from, even my hardest punches only make ghosts go away for a short time. And you can't reason with 'em, either."

Which order he'd tried those two options in was anyone's guess.

"You won't have to concern about that," Voile reassured him. "I promise. Of course, I can't promise that if anything happens to me. So you should probably keep me safe. You see, I don't have any physical power. If I were to fight someone, I'd lose, and badly. Mind you, I'm friendly to everyone, so I shouldn't have any enemies, but some people here don't need a reason to hurt anyone."

Eggman.
The guy who was responsible for killing the Kraken.
Cyrus, who wasn't there any longer.
Warren, who didn't seem to have any plans of repeating the past.

Basically, there were some bad eggs, but those were everywhere.

"Eggman never needs a reason to mess with folks." Knuckles replied, rolling his eyes and working hard not to grind his teeth. Dang, he hated that guy!

"Don't worry. If you're ever in danger, I'll fix it. I've helped save my whole world plenty of times. I know how to deal with bad guys." he said, cracking his knuckles and grinning at her. "Anyone who messes wi' you won't know what hit them. Till they see it was my fist."

"If you're ever in danger, I'll fix it."

And there it was. Confirmation that her charming power of suggestion certainly was effective. Voile could play the part of the weakling and some people liked the idea of being needed. And it helped that she knew Knuckles had been the sort of guy who would look after her. In a way, it was a little thrilling because it was akin to creating her own little empire. Before, such things had only been inadvertent. She had seemed gentle and willowy, easy to break, and she'd not corrected anyone.

It was the first time she willingly said she was weaker than she was.

"Oh, good," she crooned in soft reply. "I'll be relying on you quite a bit it seems, then. I hope you won't mind too much."

"Me? Mind? Nah - Like I said, it would be great to spend more time with you. And I'm at my best when I'm doin' something useful. You got nothing to worry about."

So, she might never need him to punch boulders out of her path or destroy a giant robotic monstrosity. She might never need him to hunt down a powerful artifact or use his skills to carry her to a half-pipe maze to collect an emerald. But that didn't matter. If all she needed was someone to sit there with her in the dark and give her someone to talk to? He could apparently do that. Or move decorations around a pageant hall? He could apparently do that, too. Maybe he had more skills and talents than he'd realized?

It was kind of nice to think that he could diversify, even if just a little.

"Anything you need. I mean it. Anything."

"I'll remember that," she said with a nod. "Without a doubt."

And she'd hold him to it. She wasn't sure what she'd need him for yet, but a few months down the way and she had a host club and contest in plan. Springtime seemed like a good thing to celebrate.

"Thank you, Knuckles." She wove her hands together with a bright smile. "It was nice to come through for you today, but you owe me in the future."

"Hey, of course! I always pay my dues - I definitely owe you one."

He was just the kind of honor bound ~~sucker~~ guy who would go to ridiculous lengths to repay a debt. And it didn't hurt that it was a debt to a super pretty lady. Nothing wrong with that.

"Right!" she agreed with a brighter grin. "One good turn deserves another, they say. So that means don't get caught up in too much trouble. Meaning, try to avoid the mistletoe. I might not always be around to save you. Unless you need me to babysit you or something."

Which she was mostly kidding about. Sort of.

"If you're offering to walk me to my dorm, I ain't gonna say No." he replied. (Quite bravely, in his own estimation.)

She nodded, "I can do that. Pretty sure I didn't have anything else that required my attention." Voile looked around somewhat curiously, "We should keep an eye out for anyone else along the way who gets stuck, all right? They wouldn't leave either of us, so we shouldn't leave them either."

"O-oh! Uh, sure! Yeah! Good thinking!"

Haha. Yeah. So that was a thing. Was she going to expect him to kiss some random stranger? Hey, he didn't want to make her do all the work - that was hardly fair. But it wasn't like he wanted to mash lips all up on someone he didn't know.

"...unless it's Eggman. Then we can just point and laugh, right?"

"Hm... Eggman..."

Voile had to take the time to really think about the man. She wasn't fond of Eggman much. He'd not done anything ever to her personally. But she had indirectly suffered beneath his hands, she supposed. After all, in the battle between the two evils, he'd trumped over her favoured one. In the same respects, however, she'd suffered beneath Warren's indirect hands as well.

Yet she was perfectly willing to defend the deceased cat. What made Eggman so different? ~~Warren was hot and Eggman was so out of season, like black in the year 1998.~~

"Maybe not point or laugh. But just leave him to suffer I think would be fine. I imagine his ghost woman would be around quick enough to save his skin all the same, anyway. He would have no need or want of your help or mine, even if we offered it." But she certainly wasn't going to offer it.

"....still can't get over the idea that Eggman has a... Y'know. Girlfriend or fiancée or whatever it is. Wait... ghost?"

THAT explained it. You would HAVE to be dead to think it was OK to date a guy like Robotnik.

"Fiancée, I think," Voile began thoughtfully. Then she nodded when Knuckled zeroed in on the phrase. "And yes. Madame Flurrie. That instructor of the drama class I told you about. Eggman may leave a lot to be desired, but I have always liked Madame Flurrie."

".....huh."

Huh.

Well, it was obvious what was going on, there. Eggman's evil dead Fiancée was fooling everyone into thinking she was somehow nice, and poor Voile had been taken in. Hook, line and sinker. Poor girl. But hey, it was OK. Eggman had fooled Knuckles once. Twice. Three tim--just, lots of times. It just happened when you were dealing with super villains.

"Well. Anyway. Just leaving him there works for me, if you don't wanna point and laugh. I was mostly kiddin' about that anyhow."

Hey he would have done it. But technically, she was helping him get to his dorm already so he should be a bother.

"I think it might be possibly poor form to point and laugh. Remember, he's faculty. You and I aren't. We can still pay consequences for taking things too far and he's got authority, whether either of us like it or not." Voile raised her shoulders in a shrug and found herself toying with the extraordinarily long braid that looped over her left shoulder.

"But I doubt we'll have to see him anyway. I haven't yet, and there's a ton of people at the academy we're more likely to cross paths with. He's probably the least of our concerns." More Knuckles's concern than hers. Voile merely wanted to avoid the guy if she could and she had yet to have any issues doing precisely that.

"I guess I never thought about it that way. He's just... Eggman to me."

They could SAY he was a teacher, but so far as Knuckles cared, he was just some jerk who liked to hurt creatures, destroy stuff and control people.

"...anyway, if we're lucky, you'll be right and we'll just see other people. Or no people." Because that worked for him.

"No people would also be a good option," Voile agreed. Because to be honest, she hadn't been as eager to help as she had been previous years. Mostly because she wanted nothing to do with memory exchanges or things of such a sort. And it was the first year mistletoe had ever done that. If that became a common occurrence, she imagined she'd have to find a different approach to feigned altruism during the holidays.

Memories could be dangerous and she had quite a few that would be rather incriminating to her person if they got out to the wrong people. At the academy, most of the people were wrong people.

"I'll keep my fingers crossed for us," she continued as she picked up her pace just a bit to scout ahead and ensure they were 'in the clear,' as it were.
