You know, it's funny how things work in life. Chell had had returned to the school after feeling guilty, in order to warn everyone about the impending danger that would befall them. What she didn't know, however, was that once the warning goes out, all it does is enrage the AI. So before anyone would dare leave, all the exit doors in the school became boarded up with panels. Any windows that may have been at the school were closed off, preventing any other means of escape.

For an hour or so, nothing happens besides that. No announcement, no warning, nothing. That is, until panels on the floor open up underneath any unsuspecting victim. The panels will lead to tubing, sending them downwards. Down into a plain white room. Thankfully, for those of you who didn't put on your Long Fall Boots, there will be a cushion to land on. Other than that, the room itself is fairly empty. The only things of mention is a table containing the equipment from the beginning of the week (if you didn't take it), a door (that won't open unless you have all the equipment), and...another person: your partner. Meanwhile, a message from GLaDOS chimes in over the intercom:


"The lockdown of Smash Academy is now complete. For those of you who are curious as to what is going on, a manual testing initiative has been added to the school's curriculum, for students and staff alike. In order to advance, you will need to work with your partner to complete the test. Failure to do so will result in...dangerous consequences.

No one will be allowed out of their current chamber until they are equipped with a communicator, a pair of Long-Fall Boots, and a Dual Portal device. Once those objects are in hand, you may start testing.

That is all."

Good luck testing, Smash. You're going to need it.

Momentarily startled by her crash shy of a foot away from him, Pit jolted. Then, he shook off the surprise to break into a grin. "Hey, Goombella! Nice to see you drop in!"

"Pit! Am I glad to see a familiar--That was a terrible pun. What the heck is going on? The whole school's on lockdown!"

He let loose some airy embarrassed laughter. "Sorry, I guess the pun sort of fell into my lap. Uh, getting serious now- I know! I heard. Beats me. I can't even open a window to make an escape that way! I like this place, but not enough to be caged up!" Pit looked mildly exasperated and sighed heavily.

"But maybe it has something to do with this 'test' the lady on the intercom was talking about." He removed himself from the pillow and headed toward the table, eyeing the gear.

"Yeah..." Goombella followed him and looked at the equipment. "She said that everyone needed to be equipped with what I'm assuming is this stuff for some kind of test. Dunno what kind of test she means, or what this stuff does..."

He picked up a portal gun and tapped one end of it against his palm, feeling its weight in his hands. "Well, better not let good equipment go to waste sitting here." That said, he went right to work equipping the boots and device. "We'll figure out the details later."

"I dunno," Goombella said, strapping herself into the boots, "something just feels really wrong about all this... You feel it too, don't you?"

Pit stared back at the goomba girl with a clueless look plastered across his face. "Not really. What am I supposed to be feeling? I mean, falling through the floor to take a test even when we don't have any classes going on right now IS a little bit out of the ordinary, if that's what you mean."

This... probably wasn't good, he knew that much. Was he being ignorant about their situation? All they had to do was test and find out what's going on as they went through the ropes, right? Maybe he should listen to her. She was known for her smarts and a knowledgeable companion who was good at giving out information, so he was all ears.

Goombella decided that some investigation would be in order. She pulled out her Tattle Log, which thankfully she still had with her, and flipped through some pages to find out a bit more about what these things were.

"Let's see... Here we are, Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device: A device with the power to create two portals that join two points in space, creating a wormhole between them. More commonly referred to as a Portal Gun. Also contains a gravity nullification device, allowing the wielder to lift heavy objects with ease. Originally conceived by Aperture Science CEO Cave Johnson after he finished huffing moon rocks."

"Aperture Science Long Fall Boots: Boots designed to nullify the force of impact after a long fall or a high jump, protecting the wearer from tremendous drops so long as they land on their feet. Developed by Aperture Science researchers to protect the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device after too many test subjects ended up dying from impacts and damaging expensive equipment in the process."

See? A fountain of knowledge.

Listening to her wellspring of instant info trickle out caused Pit to perk up excitedly. There was a notable shine in his eyes as he gushed, "You really are just as handy as a guide book to have around! Now I don't have to worry about getting lost in this test, or not knowing what to do next. I'm so glad to have you as my partner!" He stood up after strapping on the Long Fall Boots and gave her a shining look of confidence. "We're gonna be the perfect combo!"

Shutting her book, Goombella suited up as well. "Well, I DO try," she said with an air of confidence about her. "Let's go pass every test they throw at us!"

And so, the pair of optimistic testing subjects went onward to tackle their test.
