Dorm Log!

Remembuh me? The roomie log turned out to be a success, and a lot of really awesome interactions took place. Because of this, I've decided it was about time to post round two. The name has been changed a little because I think it reflects the premise slightly better.

Basically, here's what this is: we all know our characters experience downtime after classes and their busy schedules, and this is a good portal for those kinds of miscellaneous dorm-shenanigans to take place. Not only does it give your characters the easy chance to meet new people in a laid-back environment but it's a good mechanism for strengthening CR and the like. Some examples can be seen in the link I provided if you fight through the buttload of comments in case I'm sort of unclear.

So how do we start? It's up to you, really. Don't have any plans with anyone else but want your character bugged? Start a thread. It helps to staple dates and times, but you can keep that completely ambiguous if you really don't care/it doesn't matter. So disembark and wreak havoc amongst yourselves! Set up karaoke and sing loudly to further improve relations with dorm neighbors! Jack cylindrical fluorescent light bulbs from the supply closet and fight like Jedi Masters! Build couch forts with other people's laundry! (...ew?) Hold a "study session" with that special someone of yours! Harass teachers and students alike with your inane questions! What bountiful possibilities await you.

After having read that, Tony said, "Huh. That is a bit strange." He pointed to the drawing of Waddle Dee as a... well, Waddle Dee. "It doesn't appear like you have any mouth to speak of, but you can still talk...?" But ironically enough, as a human, he had a mouth yet couldn't speak a word! How backwards was that?

"I don't really know how. I just kind of... can." Waddle Dee never understood the ~*~magic~*~ of speaking without a mouth. It was supposed to be different, right? He should be unable to speak in that form. Alas, however, all he can do is speak without a mouth. With a mouth, it was so much tougher!

"I can even eat things, too. I don't know how food goes in." It, too, just happens. Waddle Dee mouths, how do they work?

Tony stopped to wonder if maybe this was the work of telepathy. Sadly enough, if that were true, Waddle Dee had traded in said telepathy for a defective mouth. Ouch.

But then there was the whole matter of eating, and Tony was effectively stumped, raised eyebrows and everything. "You... don't even know?" Maybe he sort of paled. "So how do you get the food inside? It doesn't teleport, does it?"

"It goes in as if I had a mouth. I don't know how it works..." Dee paused. "Every Waddle Dee can do it. I'm not the only one. No one knows why, I don't think."

Science was not that one thing that Dees were well-versed in.

"Well, I figured... sort of. Oh!" His fingers snapped. "You don't suppose it has to do with willing the food inside just by ways of wishful thinking, do you? If that's so, how incredible!" The excitement kind of died down after another thought struck him. "...But at the same time, from a different perspective, it might sound like a load of rubbish. Hmm."

"I... guess so." Dee wrote. "When I put it at my mouth, I think of eating it, so I guess that's what happens. I think." It kind of made sense to him.

What didn't make sense to him, however, was the word 'rubbish'. What are English words? "Uh... what does rubbish mean?"

In all 17 years of his life, Tony had never been asked this question before. It seemed to self-explanatory. "It means... well, what I meant by that was that is might sound like absolute nonsense to some people. So, I guess you could say rubbish is a load of trash."

Oh! Trash. Waddle Dee obviously knew what that was. Garbage, trash, another man's treasure... that sort of thing. That was such a strange word for it, though. Rubbish? That made it sound like a rubbing motion done differently or something. Dee took things too literally sometimes.

"Oh. I know what trash is, so... that makes sense. I guess these are new human words that I don't know. I think so."

Tony laughed it off, then repeated the phrase, "Human words? What, do you have a special language you speak at home? If so, can I hear a sample of it?"

Oh, um... Waddle Dee wasn't sure what to make of that. He didn't have a specific language back home, but it was more of a different... dialect? Was that the word?

"I mean... I mean if people here have different words. I speak the same way you do. But we say garbage and trash instead of rubbish."

"Ohh... I see." Okay, maybe he was marginally disappointed to hear that Waddle Dee didn't speak any colorful new languages. But to compare his dialect to... human dialect? How funny it sounded. Tony felt a bit amused by this.

"Can you come up with any examples? If... not, then I understand. It can be difficult sometimes."

"Uh... I guess just words like those. Rubbish, and... I think I heard someone in the city say poppycock once. It doesn't sound really appropriate."

Dumb as rocks as he may be sometimes, Waddle Dee wasn't naive to those kinds of things.

"Poppycock?" This coaxed a chuckle from Tony; he could see why it was so strange. He hooked his finger next to his chin and considered how to put it. "I know for a fact that my dialect is a bit different than most who attend this school... I'm sure you can tell. My good friend has been here longer than I have, and his accent has waned ever so slightly, I noticed." His smile seemed to be stretching. "Have you ever come across a student named Jeff? Jeff Andonuts? Oh, he lives next door, in fact. I wish we were rooming together, but... well, I'm trying to get a word in with the headmaster so that I can change rooms! He's all alone for the time being. Hmm, it's been a long while since... hmm."

Waddle Dee listened as Tony prattled on about his dialect, an accent, and a... Jeff somebody. Tony seemed pretty happy about talking about him, too. Maybe they were really, really good friends? It was nice to have friends like that! Dee found that admirable already. He was able to warm up to Tony a little.

"Jeff? I don't think I've met him before. He has an... 'accent' like you? You mean that's how you sound? So he sounds like you?" Dee shuffled a little. He was not very good with words, and it showed. He was mainly having trouble conveying what he wanted to say. Languages are weiiiird.

"And, uh... maybe the Headmaster can let you do that. He's really nice. For a giant hand."

Tony read what Dee had to tell him with a smile stuck on his face. "Mmmhmm! That's the long and short of it." He softened his incline a little and continued talking. "I keep bothering him about it, but no luck has come to me yet... The headmaster. I don't get replies to my e-mails and when I want to remind him, he's always busy... It almost feels like I'm nothing but a nuisance to him."

Quiet all of a sudden, he let his thoughts bake for a few more seconds. "What do you think I should do? Keep persisting with my point, or leave the poor hand be for a while?"

Waddle Dee wasn't exactly the best at giving advice. He tried to think it over, but it felt like a little too much for his poor, diminutive brain to handle. His frown was easy to notice as he realized that he wasn't so sure what to tell him. What could he do?

"Um... maybe you can give him a little time. I dunno. I guess he'd be busy a lot." Dee paused for another moment, letting his thoughts run through again. "Then you can give him mail again."

"So you think I should wait for longer intervals of time before I decide to contact him about my request. Sounds reasonable enough! Perhaps every other day is a bit much..." HMMM.

"I dunno. Maybe, so... taking your time sounds like a good idea. I think it'll work." A small spark of confidence and a smile ran across Dee's face as he wrote. He helped someone! At least, it felt like he did. He felt glad that he could be of service in some way.

"If you need more help with it... or with other stuff, you can ask me again any time you want. I mean, if you want."

Why, Waddle Dee was one of the nicest, sweetest boys that had ever wandered into his room. Okay, not just out of the scant handful that might have done that, but in general. Tony was touched by his willingness to help out as much as possible.

He patted the other boy on the shoulder with warm gusto. "Thank you! My, you're a fan of helping others out, aren't you? If ever I run into any fixes you could help me out of, I will think of you."

Waddle Dee felt his eyes squeeze shut at the contact, but not exactly out of feeling uncomfortable. He was more pleased than anything, and as Waddle Dees cannot smile, he was used to being expressive with his eyes.

"Yeah. I wanna help everyone because they gave me a place to stay. They're nice, too, so I wanna help them because of that. So... thanks for letting me help."

Reading this new message, Tony felt his heart lurch and be tugged. A place to stay? What could he mean? "No, I should be thanking you..." he replied, more focused on the words in front of him and all the possible plights life could have thrown Waddle Dee into. Had he been abandoned? He of all people didn't deserve that treatment.

It was going to take fumbling with words to ask such a thing, but... "Um... pardon if I'm prying into sensitive matters... Just shake your head if you refuse to answer! Well, here goes nothing. What sorts of circumstances would leave you with no place to stay?" Tony looked on with sentimental eyes, ready to hear the sad tale he was expecting to come out.

Waddle Dee's eyes doubled in size, and indeed, his head did shake. However, it wasn't because he didn't want to answer. It was as if he was saying no, it wasn't sensitive. It was, in fact, in his nature to be a bit of a traveler, and he loved that way of life. He was just very thankful to those who aided him on his journey around.

"Um, nothing bad, I promise. I just travel. A lot. I never stay in one place for long..." He paused and added a little extra. "I like it here, though. I also like traveling. I dunno if I'll stay or if I'll go one day, but I want to stay for now. If that makes sense."

Tony nodded and decorated his features with a smile again. "You had me worried there for a sec. I thought you had been abandoned or left homeless or something bad like that, but it turns out you're alright after all. What a relief!"

He turned a small ways to give his room a once-over with his eyes, noticing that while there were a few odds and ends blemishing the cleanliness of the dorm, there wasn't much left to be done. That was fine! He wouldn't have to trouble Waddle Dee so much, but then... it dawned on him that because of such little cleaning left to do, he wouldn't stay quite as long as if the room had been trashed. Tony liked his unexpected company.

"There... isn't much cleaning left to do, but if you would like to, um... hang around a little longer, I wouldn't mind! At all. So... make yourself at home!"

"R-Really?"

Tony, can you feel Waddle Dee's eyes sparkling? Because they are. Golly gee, Tony was being so nice! He was even letting him stick around! It was as if he wanted his presence here, and that made him feel so warm inside. What a nice guy!

"I'd like to stay for a little. I mean, since you don't mind. I like it here. Uh... I'll turn back now so I can really talk again."

POOF. After giving Tony the notepad, the human was then replaced with the tiny marshmallow puff again.

"There, that's better, I think."

Oops. Tony squealed. The transformation was not only startling, but what replaced the boy with the scarf over his mouth was furry and adorable. He broke into another grin, then held up the notepad for himself to read.

Oh, but Waddle Dee was talking. Tony peered back down and made a comment about that. "Oh! You're talking. It's- well, I remember you writing down here that you could talk, but even then, it's really surprising to finally hear your voice. I'm sorry about squealing like that, by the way."

Looking at the puffball, he also began to wonder if being so small would actually help the Waddle Dee be a better cleaner-upper than if he was more human-shaped. It was the way he was born though, right? So maybe he was used to it.
