[Open Log] Emergency Pre-Prom Dance Lessons!

When it came to prom, Shantae may not have had a date, but she was definitely looking forward to a night of fancy dress, good food, and dancing. Provided another giant robot monster didn't attack again. Hopefully that wouldn't happen again. But to ensure that night of dancing and fun could come to pass, one important thing had to happen.

People had to know how to dance at a party.

But fortunately Shantae had skills to help there. Another series of hand-made posters on the walls told people when to come and get private lessons for the prom if they were interested. The posters looked a lot nicer this time around. Her penmanship had been improving. Although she had foregone gel pens this time for scented markers, but baby steps.

Lucca saw the posters hanging in the hallway. Although her own dance skills were much better than her own opinion of them, she was pretty sure she was going to prom this year and wanted to be prepared!

So, swimming in sweats and a shirt, she sneaks into the dance hall at the time and date on the poster...

You would not get past Shantae's sometimes keen senses, not when dancing was involved!

"Hey, Lucca!" she greeted with a smile. "Here for some dance lessons?"

Despite her obvious insecurity, she smiles when she sees her friend. "Hi, Shantae! Yeah... We haven't really covered the kind of dance we're gonna have in the club, and normally I just sit out prom altogether, but..."

"Buuuuuuuut?" she asked, a small grin on her face. "You've got yourself a daaaaaate~?"

"I... I do, yeah!" She squeaks a little. They haven't made plans yet, but even if Rock doesn't ask her, she's going to ask HIM, dammit.

"And I wanna be ready!"

"I knew it!" she said, the small grin having graduated into a full on smirk. "Tell me about him! And while you're at it, have you ever done formal dancing before? Like ballroom style?"

"Ballroom? Not really. Not at all, actually." She replies quickly to her second question. Then the first:

"He's a student here! Rock Light? I dunno, maybe you know him. We shared a few classes and got to know each other I wound up fixing him after he broke down a little bit from lack of maintenance, and one thing sorta led to another..."

Lucca. Lucca, you missed an important point.

"Oh. He's a robot, by the way."

Sonny knew how to dance.(Well. 'Knew How To' was a pretty subjective term in general.) But he was never really going to turn down an opportunity to practice, or to spend time with his buddy, Shantae.

"Hiiii!" He called, entering the room as he'd done on so many occasions before. "If you have time, want to practice?"

"Hi, Sonny! Sure, I'm up for practicing!" she said. "Getting ready for prom?"

[punchtheflute]

"Yay!" he replied, setting down his schoolbag and rolling his shoulders a little - limbering up was an important part of dancing, after all.

"Yeah! I want to be able to dance with all my friends!" he replied to her question. "And I've been practicing by myself, too, so I want to show you how much better I've gotten in between club meetings!"

"Sounds good to me!" she said, stepping up to him, holding out her hands to take his. "You've been to prom before, so does that mean you've done slow dancing or ballroom before?"

[punchtheflute]

"Yep!" he said, reaching in to take her hands in his and stepping forward. "I really like slow dancing and ballroom both - Slow dancing is a little easier for me than anything else."

He'd actually danced with a few people, not the least of which was Voile, of course.

He started to lead.

"I also especially enjoy the foxtrot! It's fun!"

"Well I don't know how much of THAT is gonna happen at prom, so let's focus on the more formal dances for now!" she suggested.

She gave him pointers when she felt it necessary, but she didn't mind just watching to see what kind of skill level he was working at. And fortunately, he was right. Slow dancing WAS easier for him than some of the other dances she'd taught. "Not bad at all," she said. "You've obviously one this before!"

"I have! I haven't been to every prom that's been held while I've been here? But I've been to most of them and slow danced at most of them, too. It's nice, because the steps are easy to remember and so long as you're moving in proper time, you're OK. Your hands always have somewhere to be, so, you don't need to remember what to do with them. Oh, and when the time is right...."

He dipped her.

"...you get to do this! Which is even more fun."

Zero wasn't here to learn how to dance. He did, however, want to learn about dances. Specifically, proms? What were they? He'd never even encountered the concept in the crapsack future, much less been to one. And knowing that the last prom at Smash Academy involved a giant robot crashing the party and attacking students, well, it was a matter of school security that he find out.

So, he wandered in near the end of the appointed timeslot, hoping she'd have finished up and have a free moment to explain.

Okay, this was unexpected. Shantae was about to leave for the day, when the last person she expected to show up actually did. Zero had been rather adamant about not being social last time they met. What changed?

"Zero? You want to learn to dance?" she asked in confusion.

Zero shot her a look that basically translated to, do you really think I'm here to learn how to dance. Really?

"I was told last year, there was an attack on the school during the dance. I've never heard of a 'prom' prior to coming here... I was wondering if you could tell me what to expect."

Less learning to dance, more learning about dances. Noun, not verb.

"Right, I guess you weren't here for that last year," Shantae answered, arms crossed and nodding. Of course he wasn't here to learn how to dance. Even so, he picked a strange time to come ask about this sort of thing.

"Well, prom is a big end-of-year celebration that schools have," she explained. "A giant monster crashed the party last year, but that's not exactly a common thing. Everyone dresses up, hangs out together, dances to good music, eats, and just has a great time spending a night with friends and the people you've spent the last year getting to know."

Zero tilted his head a little, taking in this information. Celebrating the end of a full school year, that did make sense.

"Do we have to dress up anything like the Halloween dance?" Because he'd prefer not.

[magicdancer]

"Sorta," she said. "It's expected that everyone attending is gonna be in formal wear. Suits and dresses," she explained. "I don't think your red vest there is gonna cut it."

[awakeningwill]

"I'm not going to have fun," he stated bluntly, "I'm going because it's my job."

Anyway, what was wrong with his vest? Everyone had vests in the future.

Melia was of course knew how to ballroom dance and how to conduct herself at formal occasions, but a prom was... a little different from the formal balls she had been expected to attend as a princess. Maybe learning another style of dance would help her feel less stiff?

[magicdancer]

New faces were always welcome in the dance studio, when they were interested in learning. And Shantae gave a welcoming smile to the new arrival. "Hi there! Here for the one on one dance lessons?" she asked, hoping to put her at ease right away.

"Oh, yes, I am!" Melia was still nervous, but she tried not to show it. "I'm afraid I'm a little rusty when it comes to types of dancing that aren't the waltz."

"Don't worry then," Shantae told her. "That's why I'm here! I'll show you a few steps so you can tear up the dance floor! Is there anything in particular you wanted to learn first?"
