Annual Fireworks Log

Who: All of you
What: Fireworks!
When: The night of July 2nd
Where: Campus, but they're visible from the surrounding area too.
Warnings: Small cameos and standard Smash shenanigans.

There was a trespasser on the school grounds. A trespasser toting a large bag full of explosives that looked potentially dangerous. Oh no, he was setting them up! Such complex rigging! What dastardly plan did he have in mind?! The first deadly missile launched into the air, and...

Oh, wait, it was just fireworks. False alarm.

Well, it was obvious by the colourful display that this mysterious trespasser had spent far too much time planning this. What was he trying to do, create a distraction so he could go on a one-man panty raid? Tempting, but not this year.

In fact, now that the fireworks could finish on their own, mystery man vanished into the night. If one looked into the right area of the sky at the right time, they might find the silhouette of some weird spacecraft-looking thing against the bright lights. Could there be a connection?

Who even cares. FIREWORKS.

"Aah! A bit of a night owl, are we?"

Never mind that sound of gears turning. Blacky was never adverse to having extra targets to drop in on in the middle of the night.

"O-oh. Sort of..." he responded, feeling a little caught off-guard. He never really considered himself as such, though he had spent many nights staying up very late reviewing legal cases, papers, and other such things.

"I was just reviewing... some things online."

"...Ah."

Phoenix. Phoenix, look at this face. This is a face that is blatantly accusing you of looking at porn all night. What do you have to say for yourself, young man.

"O-oh! I mean, no, nothing like that!" he quickly corrected, knowing that anyone within a five-mile radius would probably jump to a dirty conclusion.

"I mean, I was actually... reviewing some old court cases."

He didn't want to mention that, but he would rather have this woman he barely knew think that than the alternative.

"Oh, of course. I have no idea why you'd think I'd believe anything differently."

The judging look evolved into a shit-eating grin!

Phoenix actually laughed in response. It was a nervous laugh, but the situation was genuinely funny. This woman's mind obviously was not out of the gutter, if her first reaction to him being "on the internet" was to judge him for presumably looking at dirty things.

"Ha ha! Well, I have to be more discreet about that."

Oh, how hard it was to resist the urge to string him along and toy with him a little. Blacky may not have been in the habit of being vulgar publicly, but it didn't mean her mind was anything close to pure. Besides, something about the fireworks display made her feel giddy and daring. Maybe it was to take her mind off of other things.

Well... maybe later.

"Alright, alright. You must be quite diligent to be doing your work so late."

He finished laughing at the situation, feeling slightly less embarrassed when Blacky changed the subject. How he hated feeling so awkward, especially around people he hardly knew.

"Oh, well, I guess diligent would be one word for it. But... I was actually just having trouble sleeping."

"Hmm..."

Blacky could relate. Ever since being sucked into the past like that - even if it wasn't her own - she'd been bothered by some of the things she saw. What Flint had gone through... what she put him through here at the school, thinking it was all in good fun, without knowing anything about him... It was an awful feeling.

She tucked a bit of hair behind one ear, waiting for a lull in the fireworks. "I don't suppose you also got caught up in... whatever it was that went on last weekend? Or is it something else?"

Phoenix's smile faded as Blacky mentioned last weekend. Reliving his trial, seeing how horribly stupid he had been in college, seeing the monster he thought he had been in love with. He wanted to think it was all a horrible dream, but he knew it wasn't. It was too real. He had read the transcript from the case, finding that Dahlia did indeed confess much quicker than he thought he remembered, thanks to Apple Kid's strange invention.

"You mean... the time travel thing? I was hoping it was all a bad nightmare," he said solemnly, gazing slightly to the side. He knew he wasn't the only one who experienced it, since Apple Kid had been there. Of course Eggman had been behind it. Who else? He sighed, recalling the event. He was lucky that it was only that strange kid who witnessed that trial from his past, and not any potential new friends like Blacky.

"It seems it affected too many people to just be a dream." Unless it was a mass shared dream, but even so, the fact it happened at all was enough to put her on edge. A weary chuckle escaped her lips as she shook her head.

"Aah, just when you think you've seen everything this school can throw at you."

Phoenix offered a sad smile in return. "I thought I had seen the worst of it after that Interstellar Amusement Park."

And... that had also been Eggman's doing. Phoenix sighed, remembering this. Why did he happen to take the one job in the school that belonged to the craziest lunatic around? He didn't know how many lives Eggman had taken, but he shuddered thinking about it. It's a shame a criminal like him couldn't be locked up. There was no solid evidence. At least, nothing that would fly in a court of law.

He had heard that there had been some other strange occurrences before his arrival, but he thought people had been joking. Apparently not.

"Ah... I think I heard something about that."

Hadn't that been around the time she left to go back to Kanto? How long ago that was, even without the strange time paradox that brought her back to a time a few months earlier than it should have been. Just thinking about that made her yearn to see her family again. Soon...

"That man alone is more trouble than he's worth. A pity our resident mass murderer couldn't have dealt with him while he was at large."

BLACKY THAT IS A HORRIBLE THING TO J... oh... she wasn't joking. Okay. Carry on, then.

Phoenix was not sure how to react to that. He gave a very nervous laugh, unsure of what to think of it. He didn't wish death upon Eggman, but if he had been proven to be responsible for the murder of others, then... Well, then he would get the death penalty in Los Angeles. And that's what Caim deserved too, or so Phoenix thought right now.

"I uh... ahahaha... I mean, well, maybe he doesn't deserve to die but... He should at least be locked up, far away from everyone."

"I suppose." She crossed her arms, looking back up in time to see a particularly red explosion light up the sky. Fitting when murder and death were the subjects at hand.

"Even locking someone up seems to be too much to ask of the justice system here. Ah, but I suppose there's nothing to be done."

Phoenix saw the bright red explosions light up the sky as well, though he didn't think of murder. They were too bright to resemble blood, but still.

He and Blacky seemed to not agree on how to handle criminals, but... everyone came from different places, so he had come to learn. By her brilliantly-colored hair, Phoenix assumed Blacky was from a place he knew nothing about, like the Pokemon land or something.

"Well, it's... good to keep the criminals away from more people they could wrong."

Blacky was just ~~colourblind as shit even without being a dog anymore~~ morbid.

"Ah, I know, just... For some reason authorities thought it would be wise to put a murderer right back into the school surrounded by children, and Robotnik continues to... be... Robotnik..."

COUGH.

"Never mind. At least nobody's died recently." In a way that they didn't recover from after that time travel nonsense, at least.

When Blacky said what she said about Caim, he turned his head to look at her, wide-eyed. Good, he wasn't the only one who thought that way.

"Yes! Exactly!" he exclaimed, "I think he should be locked away until a trial... Where I come from, a crime like that would earn him jail time with no bail, until his trial. And if he was guilty..."

He didn't finish that sentence. He didn't want to mention the death penalty and start a debate over it, since it was quite a controversial subject. Even he wasn't sure if he agreed fully with it, but that's just the way it was.

"A shame this place seems to function on entirely different rules from the rest of the world. I suppose it just adds even more to the mystery of just where it is anyway."

Actually, that made for some good intrigue and mystery. What if something sinister was actually afoot?

Phoenix nodded. Everything about this place was so upside down, so unlike everything he knew at home. Space Amusement Parks were possible, time travel happened, animal-like creatures could turn into humans and talk... He couldn't list everything that was so different, but those were some that stuck out in his mind.

"Yeah. I admittedly don't exactly know how I got here. But... I was able to go home for Christmas and such."

It puzzles him greatly. He really doesn't know where he is, but he can easily go home. Was this something new he had to investigate?
