Annual Fireworks Log
Who: All of you
What: Fireworks!
When: The night of July 2nd
Where: Campus, but they're visible from the surrounding area too.
Warnings: Small cameos and standard Smash shenanigans.
There was a trespasser on the school grounds. A trespasser toting a large bag full of explosives that looked potentially dangerous. Oh no, he was setting them up! Such complex rigging! What dastardly plan did he have in mind?! The first deadly missile launched into the air, and...
Oh, wait, it was just fireworks. False alarm.
Well, it was obvious by the colourful display that this mysterious trespasser had spent far too much time planning this. What was he trying to do, create a distraction so he could go on a one-man panty raid? Tempting, but not this year.
In fact, now that the fireworks could finish on their own, mystery man vanished into the night. If one looked into the right area of the sky at the right time, they might find the silhouette of some weird spacecraft-looking thing against the bright lights. Could there be a connection?
Who even cares. FIREWORKS.

falls and splats on the floor like a bug. grose.
Notably, he wasn't rejecting his company. He didn't feel his chest tighten as it once did with pure irritation and resisted upset. He didn't really feel anything at all, nothing pressuring him to drive him away, and he wasn't sure why. It was likely their little encounter on the ARK that did this to him, something that made his eyelids droop. One step forward, two steps back, like always.
...
That flutter in his chest must have been a sign of incoming heartburn. He'd take an antacid later, if need be.
"There are other 'spots' around me," he stated simply, his voice not laced with malice, but rather, with wonderment. The sky had captivated him, and he wasn't feeling opposed to Sonic joining him for the view.
He was, however, against the way his heart was speaking louder than his mind.

For as long as Sonic could hold his silence - which, when curious as he was was not for very long at all - he spent it with his arms relaxed behind him and his legs swinging like a child with plenty on his mind. The atmosphere was expectedly dark, and the blooming flowers above disliked the fact it concealed the purity of Sonic's expression. Determined with their ever so brief life, they gave it all to light up the sky and detail the curve to his cheeks and how bold his grin was, as well as how soft his eyes were in the proper reds and blues and whites.
He exhaled his excessive excitement and spoke once again. "Neat, right? Y'ever seen 'em before?" Seeing Shadow's life on the ARK made him wonder now.

... If only Maria could see these. They really were beautiful.
"Of course not," he spoke, his tone gentle instead of the normal toughness he tended to display to the other hedgehog. He glanced towards him in his peripheral vision, bright blue dampened by the dark, made nothing more than a sweet, subtle navy. "One cannot see fireworks from the recesses of space."
He paused, eyes trailing further to the side to see him, the blue hedgehog in his prime and... and happy. Very happy. How naturally the emotion seemed to come over him, yet for Shadow, he had to strain. He couldn't let joy wash over him so easily. Whenever he smirked or grinned, it was either forced or with devious, harmful intent.
...
He might have envied Sonic for that.

He caught Shadow's stare when his eyes descended just long enough to walk along the ebony temple that belonged to the spirit inside of it. C'mon, his little smirk said.
no subject
"Perhaps you can't help it," he told him, his voice low as if someone was watching them, when that clearly wasn't the case, "but not everyone is capable of... smiling with such ease."
no subject
He snorted and withdrew his attention for the fireworks again. "It's not rocket science, Shadow." He probably knew all about rocket science, knowing him. Hmm. "When you're happy, you smile. It just happens."
But as soon as those words toppled out of his mouth, he was looking at his companion once more, inquiry weighing down an eyebrow. "Unless you're not."
no subject
It wasn't necessary to speak. It didn't have to be.
Yet at this point, he wondered what happiness even felt like anymore.
no subject
"Wow, didn't think my company was that bad," He said with a natural chuckle. He may have said that, but it wasn't like he was going anywhere. Sonic's intentions were right here beside Shadow and he wasn't about to leave him this way.
no subject
The hissing speech Shadow gave him was something he should have held back. He froze, already regretting having said anything, having let him just be here because all this did was cause him more and more inner turmoil! Damn hedgehog, why did he deal with him?!
...
He dropped his gaze down to the flowers all the way below, gleaming in the nightlight and in the firework's bright, watchful eyes. He flicked an ear and his head remained low as he sat there, clearly a little downcast.
Silence reigned over him, but then he finally spoke.
"... No matter what I do," he slowly, cautiously told him, "you will never understand."
no subject
"Well, I was kiddin'," he began with. "I know for a fact I am amazing company." While Shadow looked down, Sonic continued to gaze skyward, not letting the somber mood dictate this moment. "But y'know, I can't read your mind. I know Casey can, but me? I got nothin' like that."
His tail gave a to and fro, ears reverting back to their default position.
"I need your help with that, Shadow."
no subject
It was all still fresh on his mind, how afraid he seemed, how much more... human he was. How he worried for him. How he wanted him to be okay. How he knew this was the end for him, and how Sonic thus stared down at him, frightened and knowing.
...
Shadow tilted his head to the other, facing him again for a brief moment, and then he lifted his head to the skies again, locking his sights on the next rocket.
"... Only she has ever made me happy."
His words were still slow, as if he was being careful about what to say, as if... saying the wrong thing would have Sonic react in a way he wouldn't like.
"I will move on. I have a planet to protect..." He dipped his head again, brows furrowing tightly. "... yet I do not expect to know happiness again."
The implication was simple:
Stop trying, Sonic.
He won't smile for anyone ever again.
1/2
Was he really so grim? Did he honestly believe he would never be happy again? Sonic's face wasn't sure what expression to even take after that, nor was he even sure how to really respond...
2/2
"You're so dramatic."
Re: 2/2
He pulled his head away from him and scooted just slightly away.
"Hmph. Just as I suspected; you will never understand."
no subject
Sonic scooted right back over - right into him. He was all up in Shadow's space, intentionally swaying his leg sideways to smack their feet together. "I feel like these fireworks have been goin' on forever. Wonder how long they'll last? What are they even for?"
no subject
"A human holiday," he answered simply. "July 4th is the day humans became free from monarchical oppression. They celebrate this freedom every year."
Such a minor thing, and yet humans took it with such open arms. Why?
He frowned.
... He wasn't going to drop the more serious subject so fast.
"You persist in making me happy." Stating the obvious first, and then moving on to... "Yet... you speak so carelessly."
EAGLES AND FLAGS AMERICA - EMPIRE CITY??? - FUCK YEAH
But his musings over the idea of how he could celebrate it again next year were interrupted by Shadow's recoil back onto their initial topic. "What!" He exclaimed with a shrug. "I was bein' honest. You are being dramatic, thinkin' you're never gonna be happy again? Isn't that a little premature?"
AHGAUIDGHSIODGHJSDOhfhj
Yet Shadow refused to believe that. He couldn't see much joy ahead of him. He was strong-willed and ready to live to carry out Maria's promise, but would he ever actually live?
...
There really was no proof that it would be the case, but otherwise...
"There is not much evidence to assure a bright future."
Wait.
Not much?
Implying that there is something...?
no subject
"Well, tell me whatcha got to work with. I'm waaaay more optimistic, so I bet I can figure something out."
no subject
That was no coincidence.
He shut his eyes, memories flying at him, many memories, the ARK, Maria, the Eclipse Cannon, that yellow Chaos Emerald, that hedgehog
and his eyes flew open, the epiphany sinking in.
He saved Sonic's life... because he wanted him to live a bright and happy future.
...
It was Shadow who didn't understand him.
Sonic's persistence comes out of caring, just like he displayed for him.
... Was this what friendship felt like?
"... You."
1/3 - Allow me to sorta ruin this for two tags
2/3
Oh boy, oh boy, OH BOY.
Look at the sky, look at the sky -
Pop. Pop pop.
Ah, yeah... Calming down.
3/3
They made time crawl in a manner Sonic couldn't be irritated by. They had an understanding of its mechanics, of the essence of eternity, and how everlasting the emotions they stirred could be under their watchful eyes. Those few moments of beauty had it all figured out. They came and went in exhalations, made the most of their singular lives while quite possibly forever changing the thousands beneath them.
Sonic wondered if they were much different from fireworks.
But right now, he was thanking them for happening. He never expected that sort of answer.
Sonic's fingers took a firmer grip on Shadow's shoulder, chest rising as he resisted just grinning like an idiot.
"Well..." He might've been slightly embarrassed, said the blush just along his cheekbone. "I coulda told ya that," he replied playfully, giving his foot another swift kick in the same spirit.
1/2
He wouldn't.
"... No. You were already trying."
He left it at that; a vague answer, but all the same with a positive meaning. He scooted further up against him, nearing to him as close as possible, and... he brought an arm around his shoulder, resting a hand on him.
Such a fascinating lifeform you are, Sonic...
2/2
and he smiled.
