Walk In Their Shoes! Surviving The Weekend In The Streets!

Characters: Daroach and students
What: The field trip begins
Where: Final Destination City
When: June 13th, Saturday morning
Rating: PG-13

Daroach stood near the exit of Final Destination City’s Subway Terminal, using his scepter as a cane to rest on. The students will arrive any minute now; soon they will venture out in the streets and live the way he once did throughout the weekend.

The mouse took a glance at the wall clock to check the time. It’s 9:45am. They have 15 minutes to show up. Until then, he will relax and enjoy the scenery.

(Okay, here’s what we can do to make this work. Everyone will post at the Subway Terminal thread where you can interact with other characters. Eventually, Daroach will notice everyone and will give out the go ahead to begin the field trip.

From that point on, you can post on any of the following threads where your char can hang out and do whatever. Other chars can join in and they can talk and such. However, if the convo takes too long and if Daroach is nearby, he will step in and break it up. He won’t be too harsh on certain threads, like if you’re standing in line to get food in the Soup Kitchen or are inside buildings like the library.

If you want your char to do something elsewhere that isn’t in any of the threads, feel free to make a separate one and do your thing. When Sunday morning comes, meet up at the Subway Terminal and Daroach will end the field trip. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I’ll do my best to answer them.

Much love to Jim for helping me out with this, cause I really don‘t know what I‘m doing, lol.)

Knuckles arrived right on time, no backpack, nothing in his pockets. As instructed. He wore simple clothes and a watch and that was it. (He'd assumed he was allowed to have a watch being, technically, it was clothing. Plus, he wanted to know when this was going to be done with.)

He looked confident as he leant against the wall. Living on the streets in this place would be a piece of cake. Shelter was abundant, food was abundant depending on how low you were willing to let your standards slip. Even money was easy to get if you had skills - Knuckles often gave to the buskers and performers that would spend time in the parks on Saturday mornings and they never seemed to be doing too badly judging by how stuffed with coins thier hats and guitar cases looked most days. Sometimes even notes.

He was a rough, rugged guy who was used to life on his own in harsher conditions sometimes than many city dwellers could even contemplate. This weekend was going to be an easy A+ and he knew it.

Nyx was a little bit late. A little bit late, and completely exhausted. She'd left for the city as soon as morning practice was over, only delaying enough to stop by her dorm, switch forms, and grab clothes.
And, by 9:45 am? Nyx was usually just about asleep.

The ghost made her way to Daroach and the rest of the class, and plopped herself down on the ground.

"alright, how much longer 'fore I can go find myself somewhere t'sleep?"

Apple Kid came with his face smeared with jam - he'd filled his stomach like Daroach had suggested last week, with an awful lot of toast for breakfast. And jam. So much jam. Aside from his trusty overalls and his bright red shirt and his Tokyo Women's University Underpants, he didn't have anything at all with him.

Save for the jam on his face and the jam that had gotten on his shirt and also the jam that was making his hands sticky.

Mmmm, jam.

He hummed a merry little tune and stood, waiting for the class to begin.

Slippy arrived with nothing but the clothes on his back just as Daroach requested.

Slippy couldn't help but feel a bit nervous about this field trip. Even though he had a fair amount of experience as both a mercenary and a military school student, Slippy had never needed to survive on his own before. He always had someone to fall back on when he was in Star Fox so this would most likely prove a challenge to him.

He licked off the faint traces of maple syrup on his fingers. Thank goodness he decided to stuff himself at breakfast this morning.

Lash arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule. Her hair might have contained a little thing or two, but it was so well hidden it was nearly undetectable. She was a Black Hole member, and they played by their own rules.

This was going to be so easy! She was a genius after all, and her plan was going to be pretty simple. Just a few little bits of infiltration and she'd be relaxing for most of the weekend doing nearly nothing.

Worst off, she would have no trouble building herself some weapons with what she could find around, and she'd lived most of her young life eating nothing but CalorieMates. If nothing worked, there was nothing like assaulting the innocent with a few well-placed lockholds and getting some food.

Hoji was SO EXCITED FOR THIS.

Her usual escapades in the forest on her own were definitely a lot of fun. Although this would be different for the very facts that 1. she would be within city limits, and 2. she wouldn't have anything with her apart from her own clothing, she thought this was going to be a bundle of fun.

She had arrived in just her object-bare state and waved to anyone else around her. "Hi everybody!!"

((Sorry I'm late!))

Goombella, who was totally on time, arrived at the subway station. She wore some comfortable clothes, and the only other thing she brought with her was her library card. Not like she wouldn't be able to get another one during this exercise, but still. She didn't like the idea of leaving her Tattle Log behind, but... Also, Daroach might have taken issue with her helmet, even though to her it's just fashion.

Alright, time to fan out and go there own way, now that the mouse was finished talking.

She was excited by the entire event, but disappointed it was only going to last a day and a half. It was time to make with that have and prove over-complicate the entire thing with a series of events how she could easily beat the system.

Lash didn't waist any time. There wasn't really a reason too, but since her first target on the other side of town and she didn't have money for a subway ticket, she decided to get a little exercise, and just ran.

Re: City Park

[identity profile] bulbmin-glutton.livejournal.com 2009-06-13 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Hoji's first stop for today was the city's quite spacious park. The benches all about the area, as well as the slides, swings, teeter-totters, and such were all there to keep her busy when she was too bored. When it came to exploration and survival, she never really got bored at all, but she'd take advantage at times anyway.

She decided to go for one of the swings and began to push herself back and forth. A loud, squeaky "Weeeeeeee!" could be heard throughout the park on the first time she shoved herself forward.

Knuckles scaled his way to the tallest boughs of the tallest trees in the whole park, stretching and giving a yawn - he'd been up late at the party, of course, so wanted to get in some sleep.

The sun was shining, the birds were singing and a light, warm breeze blew in from the south that caused the upper boughs to sway oh-so-gently. If it wasn't for the taint of smog to the air and the sounds of traffic and other people, he could almost imagine he was back on Angel Island.

He lay out accross a couple of branches, making sure to wedge himself in close against the tree's center as he closed his eyes and let the sun wash over him.

Ah! The city park. And where there's a big city park in the early summer there's often a farmer's market on the weekends! There was always a farmer's market at the park in Twoson. Every day. Rain or shine.

And what luck! Apple Kid found a farmer's market buttressed right up against the park. Exactly where he expected to find one.

He looked at the stalls and people selling their wares. Finally he found what he was looking for - an old woman selling eggs. Farm fresh eggs.

Apple Kid waddled up to her and said, "Hello!"

"I sell fresh eggs. They're nutritious! Please buy this beautiful, beautiful egg! Please? You won't get through your teen years without at least one egg," the old woman said, strangely. "$12," said the woman. "For one fresh egg."

"That seems reasonable!" burbled Apple Kid merrily. "I'll take five, please."

Apple Kid forked over his $60 to the old woman and the old woman gave him five eggs. He put them in the bib of his overalls.

Apple Kid left. The old woman shook her head and stared at the $60 she'd just been given for five eggs. There was something decidedly odd about that boy. Very, very odd.

By the time Slippy was tired of running he found himself at playground of the park. He took a seat on one of the swings and buried his face into his hands.

Slippy felt so horrible. Not only did knock a man out with a household appliance, he stole from him too and left him there in the street.

His stomach gave a growl. He took his cap off and pulled out a moldy pizza crust. He cringed as he began to nibble on it hesitantly. It tasted horrible but it was still better than Fox's cooking but Slippy felt too ashamed to use the money he had acquired at the moment.

Re: Downtown

[identity profile] notstevejobs.livejournal.com 2009-06-14 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ah! Downtown! Surely there was a department store somewhere around here. There's always a department store in big cities like this. Eventually, after a bit of wandering, Apple Kid found it.

He waddled up to the "returns" counter and with jam stained fingers, pulled a hamburger out of his overalls.

"Can I help you?" asked the woman at the counter.

"I'd like to return this hamburger, please," said Apple Kid.

A strange look crossed the woman's face, as if some set of rules she wasn't aware of were suddenly being enforced for the first, and possibly only time in her life. "Of course," she said, "I can give you $7 for that hamburger."

Sold!

Apple Kid continued this strange dance for a time until he'd sold off most of what he'd found in trashcans to the department store. Not that the department store sold hamburgers, but for some reason they were buying them off of him for strangely high prices.

In the end kept two hamburgers, the calorie stick, both bags of fries, and the can of fruit juice for his lunch, and came away with $60!

He thanked the kind lady at the returns counter and waddled out of the store. After he left she looked down at the pile of strangely fresh fast food. And wondered why in the world she gave that fat, messy little boy $60 for a bunch of fast food he'd been keeping in his overalls.

At least she didn't know where it came from originally!

Re: Alley

[identity profile] notstevejobs.livejournal.com 2009-06-14 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
An alley! Perfect! There were sure to be trashcans in an alley! Lots of them!

He opened the first one he came across - empty. Shucks.

He opened the second one he came across - a piping hot hamburger still in the wrapper! He put it in his inventory put it in bib of his overalls somehow.

He opened the third one he came across - a piping hot hamburger still in the wrapper! He put it in his overalls.

He opened the fourth one he came across - empty. Darn.

This continued on until he had in his possession 5 piping hot hamburgers, 3 very hot cups of coffee, 2 piping hot double burgers, 2 crisp and salty bags of fries, a still perfectly wrapped calorie stick, an ice cold can of fruit juice, and a fresh and aromatic bread roll. All from trashcans.

Not a bad haul! The front bib of his overalls was getting pretty full he felt that he only had one more space in his inventory so he felt that it was time to go to that department store!

This living on the streets thing was pretty easy.

One of Hojita's other first stops would be for the Soup Kitchen for some delicious food. She stood in line, hoping they had some kind of meat, but when it came to survival, she supposed she had to eat just about anything out there at the moment.

She looked over at the other people in line, many of them probably out and alone on their own, as well. Wow, she wondered how much of an adventure it was for them to be doing this kind of thing every single day!

Ah, the library. Goombella spent many days in the library at U Goom studying. That's how she planned to treat this; she could manage 24 hours easy. At least she hoped.

Scanning the bookshelves and taking out about 2 or 3... or 10 books, she found herself a desk, cracked the first one open, and started to read.

[personal profile] thewunderkind 2009-06-14 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It was a quiet Saturday afternoon in the industrial corner of city. Only a few factories were working at full capacity this hour and day, most of the workers from the week gone or at home. This left the small young adult running in the streets by herself, her boots echoing loudly before coming to a stop when she found what she needed.

Step 1 - Becoming Unrecognizable.

She held her breath and dunked her head completely into the ice-cold water, giving it a quick dry as her hair falling down on her shoulders. The result made her look different than normal. But now had only twenty minutes before her hair would dry up and her afro sneaked back up on her, so she had to do this as fast as possible.

She ran again.

Apple Kid walked up to the front desk and asked for a room for the night. He paid the princely sum of $75 and was given one of the two rooms a room for the evening. And it even came with a free continental breakfast! Oh boy, more jam!

Later that evening Apple Kid went out and bought some Peanut Cheese Bars (oh so delicious) and then went dumpster diving for more hamburgers for dinner (nobody ever throws away Peanut Cheese Bars, sadly).

As it was Saturday evening, when he got back, he took a bath, not wanting to miss out on the bi-weekly event. He had no clean clothes, but just put on his jam-stained overalls and shirt again.

In the morning, Apple Kid had a leisurely, and jam-filled breakfast at the hotel. He would return to the train station by noon, with a fresh coat of jam on, and over $500 in his pockets.
