The first sight of snow cascading from behind the window gave Rhys such a spark of joy, but he wouldn't gather his bearings, bundle up and whisk out the door for the crystalline winter magic just yet. He would wait until there was a whole blanket of the white stuff to tread on.

Fortunately, the snow fell like confetti, so Rhys didn't have to wait for long. He knew he shouldn't spend so much time out here that he froze his toes off or anything, especially considering he had a bit of a fever going on, but he could at least stand for a brisk walk across campus and back, he promised himself.

This would not pass through the Ulki Radar. It simply wouldn't do.

He was alerted by the light footsteps unique to Rhys exiting his living quarters and heading for the outdoors. Ulki had been sitting on the roof and listening to the snow gently coat the campus. With the additional soundtrack of people running about, but that was something he could tune out easily.

With Rhys exiting the building by this point, Ulki, trying to put on the most stern of looks he could manage (which was pretty stern!), slid off the top of the academy and descended to slowly land in front of his priest friend.

He crossed his arms.

Rhys had been minding his own business out there until the telltale rustle of feathers got caught in his ears and he looked up to watch Ulki descend directly in front of him. Oh. Oh no. He knew what this could be about... He was about to get a stern talking-to! Ulki expressly forbade him from walking out in the freezing cold air while feeling unwell. In a manner much like a schoolchild being caught red-handed after curfew he diverted his eyes away from the bird man and made an awkward, embarrassed grin that he tried to hold back.

"Um... why, hello there, Ulki!" he fronted with a nervous, airy chuckle barely audible by anyone (in this case it would definitely be heard). "Fancy meeting you out here! Are you, uh, enjoying the snow...?"

[identity profile] hawkhearsyou.livejournal.com 2011-12-14 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
He was. Normally, he would share that with Rhys, too. But it was time to be firm.

"Rhys." His posture did not change, and he brushed the question off like he hadn't said a thing. "You did not get better this quick."

[identity profile] sicklypriest.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"I, uh... well, I HAVE been sniffling a little less... and I think my fever has gone down a degree," Rhys persuaded with the same abashed face on. Like he knew this excuse probably wouldn't fly with the hawk laguz. "Maybe even two!"

[identity profile] hawkhearsyou.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"You are guilty," he reminded him, easily picking up on his nervousness. "You should be relaxing in your room, and you know it."

[identity profile] sicklypriest.livejournal.com 2011-12-27 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay, you've got me..." Rhys admitted, forlornly letting his arms drop down slack. "I just wanted to go on a short walk, that's all... It was going to be brief, I swear it! Then I was going to amble on back, to my room. Where there's no snow. Yeah..."

Ulki, why must you be such a mother hen sometimes! Rhys can never have any fun with you around! He's always slated to be caught sneaking out.

Rhys' disappointment was apparent, and Ulki almost wanted to let him finish his walk. But no, he could not let himself be lenient. Not even to Rhys.

"I understand your intention. However, you know you need to do anything you can to recover from your illness," Ulki said. "You easily fall under the weather."

[identity profile] sicklypriest.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I know... I know that better than anyone, really. But the snow was calling, and it just looked so fresh and white," he explained. "It was so hard to resist."

[identity profile] hawkhearsyou.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
The hawk laguz definitely understood. He could only imagine himself in Rhys' position, being cooped up inside for indefinite amounts of time while he underwent illness after illness. It would be frustrating.

"You went outside. Now is the time to head back. The snow will still be here when you get better." Or... so he hoped. Who knew how long it would take.

[identity profile] sicklypriest.livejournal.com 2012-01-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
"You're probably right." When snow fell upon Smash Academy, it usually hung around for a while. Rhys acknowledged that and was placated by a notion so comforting. It would still be here, and he could take many more strolls and make dozens of footprints another day.

The healer closed some distance between himself and Ulki, a fresh smile on his face. "While I may resent some of the measures you take in spoiling my fun, you do a very good job looking out for my well-being."

[identity profile] hawkhearsyou.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ulki looked away, feeling a bit bad for his tactics. "Er... sorry. For cutting short your walk. But you know you should do more -- I mean, less... to get better."

If that made sense. He was pretty sure if he'd just gone with his prior train of thought, it would still have made sense, but he phrased it differently anyway.

"Shall... I escort you?"

[identity profile] sicklypriest.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
"I see no problem with that! Come along, Ulki. We shall return."

It would be neat if they somehow turned this into a winter walk of its own, and the more was always the merrier, he thought. He chose to view it from that angle and walked along happily with one of his closest friends by his side. Ulki was probably too serious to think of it the same, but it mattered not at all.

[identity profile] hawkhearsyou.livejournal.com 2012-01-03 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Very well."

Well, it could definitely be considered the end of a walk, for they had a bit of distance to cover before they made it to the teacher dormitories. But, as Rhys predicted, Ulki was viewing this more as taking a prisoner back to his jail cell, only... not quite as harsh. And to be honest, he felt a little bad about cutting Rhys' fun short. But it had to be done, he reminded himself again.

"What are your plans... for the holidays?" he decided to ask, unsure of the validity of his question. He'd never been good with more personal conversational topics.

[identity profile] sicklypriest.livejournal.com 2012-01-05 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well... I was planning on decorating the infirmary festively," the priest began, not entirely solid what his arrangements would be for the season besides what was customary around the city. "That was my plan for when I got better. And maybe, if Vianca would like, we could try building a gingerbread house together. That sounds like a lot of fun." His smile showed just how much the thought tickled him.

[identity profile] hawkhearsyou.livejournal.com 2012-01-06 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Ulki had never made a gingerbread house. He didn't know how it could be fun. He'd never been much for decorating for the holidays, either, but he could easily see that Rhys enjoyed the thought of it. What could he say to contribute? He didn't have much experience, nor did he ever find these activities interesting to think about.

"Do you... need any help?" he finally asked. He could at least provide him with what he needed if necessary...

Rhys looked upon Ulki softly and warmly. "I could most certainly use a hand. Especially for those harder-to-reach areas."
hawkhearsyou: (That's... considerate.)

[personal profile] hawkhearsyou 2012-01-22 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Then, consider me available for assistance," Ulki decided, his head bobbing a little in a brief nod.
