In the mid-morning hours, Black Shadow slips a letter under the door of a certain turret. The letter reads as follows:

Attention [VIVIAN],

I am writing to inform you that you are CORDIALLY INVITED TO JOIN/ARE NOW A MORTAL ENEMY OF the Black Shadow Organization. Your UNIQUE ABILITIES/CONSTANT MEDDILING have attracted our INTEREST/IRE and we wish to offer you a POSITION IN OUR GROUP/CHANCE TO BEG FOR MERCY.

We know that you are EXCITED/TERRIFIED by this OFFER/THREAT, and we advise that you RESPOND/PREPARE FOR YOUR HORRIBLE DEMISE as soon as possible.

She was familiar with this office due to a previous engagement where she proved she was totally not lying. How dare he ever assume so?

Vivian didn't often receive letters like this, though, ~~did anyone~~ so she was especially excited to be addressed personally. Someone wanted to work with her, and since she was no longer associating with Taka, it got a little lonely. The Doctor was a busy man, after all. She worried about bothering him.

She gave a few knocks to his door before entering.

"Hello?"

Black Shadow is the picture of hospitality. He actually stands up and opens the door for her to welcome her. The chair facing his desk is even pulled out at an angle that he supposes is particularly inviting.

The letter hadn't scared her off. Already, Black Shadow had a good feeling about this.

"Come in, come in! Please, sit down!"

Someone really needed to teach Vivian how to sense danger.

But since no one was readily available, she walked right in and accepted his offer, hopping into the seat and following his movements.

"Thank you," she said, wanting to be polite and make a good impression. "You need my help?"

That earns a good-natured chuckle from Shadow, who seats himself in his own chair.

This was almost unsporting, like vaporizing a racer in a stalled car. But now she was characterizing this as him needing help? His eyebrow quirks just a little.

"It's more that I have a business proposition for you. I want to hire you for my organization."

"Hi...gher?" Vivian bit her bottom lip. "I don't really like high places." Sorry, Shadow, she's actually pretty dumb. "Uhm, what do you need me high up for? I'll do my best..."

Oh.

Oh, OK.

One of THOSE henchmen.

Well...she'll be easy to manipulate?

"...No. I meant I want you to do work for me, and in return I will pay you."

Pretty much.

"Oh," she realized, looking a little relieved. "Okay."

WELL THAT WAS EASY. But really, it just sounded like she could help him out and that mattered!!

"What can I do for you?"

"Ah. Perfect! Thank you! You're very accommodating!"

Yeah, he did not expect this. At all. Not that she seems the type to catch how caught off-guard he is but...

"What I need," he ventures, "is the right person in the right place at the right time. I think that could be you, my dear, if you're willing."

Oh, this sounded so easy. Vivian laced her fingers together and quickly stood up from her seat. Even she could do something like that, right? And she'd make someone happy, wouldn't she?

"I will help," she agreed, voice brimming with the motivation to do so. But slowly it dawned on her that she didn't really know what he meant. "Where is the right place? Uhm, and when is the right time?"

He chuckles. "Well, that's the beauty of it. You only know it's the right time when the right time comes."

He thinks for a moment, then reconsiders: "That is, you'll know it's right because I'll tell you it's right. I'm more or less asking you to be on call when it comes."

"I see," she murmured, guessing it was just one of those... 'what-if' situations she hears a lot about sometimes. Figuring she'd ask anyway, she took a couple steps closer, hands folded in front of her. "Do you know what I will do yet?"

"I think I do in fact," he said, folding his hands on the desk in front of him.

"Tell me: Do you have many friends here?"

"U-uhm, I try to be everyone's friend!" And that was true. If Vivian was anything, it was friendly to a terrible fault. "Are you... looking for friends?"

"That's one way to put it," he shrugs. "I need someone who can get me information on people and give information to them in kind."

It's honestly getting embarrassing how easy this is. If she falls for what he says next, then he'll feel like he just won the lottery, or what he imagines that must feel like to anyone who doesn't have enough money to do anything at any time, ever.

"You see, I have a teaching philosophy that involves learning everything I can about students and teachers so that I may tailor my teaching accordingly. But it doesn't work if they know what I'm doing, so I need someone to get that information for me, you see?"

"Oh...!" That made sense. "I understand." Congratulations, you won the hypothetical lottery, asshole. "Sometimes I have trouble understanding, so..." She really did get the benefit behind that sort of thing. "We can help a lot of people!"

"Of course we can! Thank you, you've been very agreeable!"

He is cashing his giant novelty asshole check as they speak.
