Health Class: HP and Damage Meters
Who: Rhys and his class.
What: Health class!
Where: Stadium
When: Thursday, April 3rd
[[More often than not, this class meets up in the classroom. However, this time around it was posted that they were to assemble in the stadium instead.
Once there, you will notice a buffet table set up off to the side, decked with a smorgasbord of scrumptious food. What is this, a party? Rhys stands in front of bleachers with a rolling blackboard next to him for explanation purposes.
After attendance is taken and everyone has settled down, Rhys begins his lesson.]]
Good afternoon, class! I hope your day is going well. For this unit, I'm going to explain 'hit points', an abstract concept commonly abbreviated to 'HP'. Standards for how this is measured out may be converted differently across worlds and circumstances, but it helps to envision it like a gauge that can be filled up or depleted. Like this!

At full health, this life bar is maxed out. When you take damage, it gets depleted. Let's say I'm in the middle of a chaotic battle and got dealt a heavy blow by an axe-wielding bandit with huge muscles. Ouch!
[[HE ERASES THE HP DOWN TO A MEASLY MEASURE. Now it looks like this.]]

That really smarted. I'm glad I survived, though. He must have been at a pretty high level... As you can see, I have a remaining bit of health left. That means I can keep fighting. Even though I'm dangerously low on health, I can always regain HP.
[[He restores his HP with the power of chalk.]]

Out in the midst of a battle or a fight where resting up is not an option, this can be accomplished in several ways. Usually it comes from either items that restore health or from magic, either cast by yourself or by an external force, like an ally. Unfortunately, my physical defenses aren't the best, so if the bandit was at an even higher level than he was, it's very likely that I could have been wiped out.

So now my HP has reached zero. I can't fight any more! This could mean that I'm either knocked out or, in some cases, had my life extinguished. But we don't have to worry about the latter in this controlled environment! At this point, regular healing items like food items or potions won't have any effect, and only more powerful items can resurrect you.
However, in Smash-style fights, life bars aren't used. Instead, damage meters are used. All fighters start out at 0% damage, and when they get hit, the damage value increases. When the damage gets racked up higher and higher, the easier it is to get knocked around. It makes you more vulnerable in general, but I won't go into the gritty details. Does anyone have any questions so far?

Down, down, down they tumbled into the infinite blackness, where perdition and ruin awaited them both.
just here with popcorn
Solemnly, Naegi writes down one sentence in his notes as he awaits their reappearance:
"☆ Don't fall off ledges!"
no subject
But then! A flash of light! And the two brawlers respawned on floating, glowing platforms above the stage, their damage meters completely reset.
"H-ha... haaa..." He needed a second. Even though the whole falling/respawn thing was covered in the student handbook, actually experiencing it for the first time was pretty jarring. "Ha! We're fine, see? I-it's... It's a good thing the stadium has this kind of technology...!"
Yeah but. Damage meters.

"Oh," said Jock. "So, uh, you can use Teleport?"
Because that's how this worked, right?
~Hovering platform, hovering platform, hovering platform~
"So, uh, I feel fine again. Do I keep hitting you now?"
He can keep hitting you.
no subject
He felt better now than he did before falling, weirdly enough. The platform beneath him flickered and vanished, but he still fell neatly on his feet, rolling his shoulders back.
THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE DEMONSTRATION, RUINED.
"Alright, how's this! We'll throw one punch each and end it that way!"
no subject
"Now, now, you two! The point here was not to 'end' it!" Maybe he should have selected the demonstrators himself... Yes, two students who would be least likely to get consumed by the heat of combat. It was a little too late for that now. "Maybe just... settle for a soft blow! That's right, like a bop on the noggin!"
A bop on the noggin.
"...But please leave their skull intact."
need a 'dramahands' icon for this
"A bop on the 'noggin?" he repeated.

He slammed his fist down on Jock's head.

And then he slammed his fist down on Ishimaru's head with great fervor.

Jock's was moderately effected by his opponent's bop.
"Alright, now what?" Jock asked. Could he hit something else? He liked hitting things.
no subject
Even so, he brought a hand to his head, exhaling sharply. "Hoo. Now... Now we eat! Isn't that right?!" He turned to Rhys and his identical twin that stood next to him for a moment before they both merged into one being in Kiyotaka's vision. Whoa.

The screen on the opposite end of the field looked very much like this:
"Yes. That's right! Both of you, try consuming some food items, if you would please." He gestured to the banquet, then gently placed his hand against Kiyotaka's back for an extra support push in the direction of the tables- and just because he was a little worried.
at least you didn't use this icon
He fell off the stage againActually, the stadium just knew things were over and the setting faded away entirely.Oh score, there was melon on the table. YOINK.
I'm using this one
He saw a ham, because that seemed like a reasonable item of food to just leave out on a table.
He grabbed the ham with both hands and started gnawing on it. Oh, sweet, sweet, delicious ham, how Jock did love you so.
