The man who tried to blow up the universe will teach you about JUSTICE

Who: Cyrus, Jupiter, anyone who still takes this goddamn class
What: Another ethics class--this one a bit more on-topic than the last
Where: Regular place
When: Monday, 1 pm
Warnings: Jupiter can and will threadjack at any given time. That's her job. Be nice to the teacher's aide...or else.

Promptly at the hour, Cyrus closed the door. There wasn't any cause to guard the room, as anyone who misbehaved would face his officer. She was sitting on his desk, legs crossed at the knees, looking out over the room.

He took in the sight of his students as they stared at her, at their desks, out the window...Yet he would command their attention soon enough.

"Class, this is Jupiter. She will assist me in my duties as your teacher. That said, today we will discuss more...practical ethics. Perhaps the previous lesson was beyond your scope..."

He walked to the front center of the room and cleared his throat before starting. "We are from varied places, some from other worlds entirely...Yet one thing we all have in common is that we are, wherever we go, bound by the law of the land. Laws are as disparate as those who occupy those lands. In some you may tithe to the king or religious leader. In another you may be required to serve in the military. In another you may have your reading material censored before it reaches you... They will claim that all laws are in the best interests of the people. However, clearly, this cannot be true in all cases."

There, Cyrus started to pace as usual. "How do we determine what is a just law? Is it action? Intent? The end result? If the king demands money to build infrastructure, it is clearly not the same as if he demands it for himself."

His head tilted, eyes unfixing as he spoke. "There are situations where even the most justifiable law must be broken. The traditional example presents a starving child who steals a loaf of bread. Setting aside for the moment the social troubles that must plague that area for that scenario to occur, ought the child be punished for theft when it was an act of survival? Ought the merchant surrender the loaf knowing that it will lessen her profit and cut into her own survival?"

He had to clear his throat again; his voice was beginning to rasp. While he was technically well, there were lingering details of his illness. "There are...risks involved in opposing unjust law. Any who protect their greed do so irrationally, and are often violent in doing so. And yet those injustices cannot be permitted to exist. They, simply, must be opposed. But is there too great a cost in the act of opposition? Where do we draw the line? What must inspire us to be willing to lay down our lives for the greater good?"

Glancing to Jupiter for a moment, but not long enough to catch her expression, he finished with "And of course, the overarching question of what must be done to establish true justice in the world...but that is for another time. For now, in order to see the big picture, we must consider what stands between us."

"You're spendin' the time here anyways, whether y'wanna or not. Ain't my fault you decided t'teach, ain't your time gettin' wasted here," She answered. Her voice was bored, and she didn't bother to look up from her page. "Should consider y'self lucky I'm here and I ain't causin' trouble."

Wordlessly, Jupiter walked over to Nyx's desk, her arms crossed.

"Well? What do we have here?" she shifted to try to look at her notebook.

"A waste'a my time, an' a teacher who don't know good fortune when he sees it." Nyx made no attempt to cover her notebook. She really didn't see what the big deal was- there were much worse things she could have done to pass the time.

Jupiter unceremoniously took Nyx's notebook and began looking through it.

"Hmm. A slacker, and on top of that, you've got no talent for this either. If only you listened to Mr Cyrus' words of wisdom, you'd have a chance to become a useful member of society. As opposed to, you know, a complete burden on everyone around you."

[identity profile] ghostly-nyx.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Nyx didn't make a motion to grab her notebook back. There was nothing in there she particularly cared about someone seeing. Some doodles like the one she'd been doing, some notes on battling, on things she should work on during practice. Nothing terribly important. Instead, she leaned back in her chair, resting her hands behind her head.

"You gonna go ahead an' say I'm a complete burden on everyone just 'cause I don't give two shits about ethics? Awful quick to judge, aint'cha, sweetheart?"

She seems to consider Nyx's question for a moment.

"If you don't know what the right thing to do is, how are you going to accomplish whatever it is that you want to do in life? Oh, that's right, you youths today have no life goals and I suppose you're no exception."

[identity profile] ghostly-nyx.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
"Need t'be alive to have life goals, an' I been dead an' buried the last 17 years. I'm strong, I'm havin' fun, an' I belong to a gym leader. More than some pokemon ever even dream." She yawned, and shifted in her seat, preparing to take a nap, once this 'Jupiter' chick would stop yammering at her.
"'Sides. Goals an' aspirations is human bullshit."

"Humph. Then what are you doing here, in a school?" she made an ample gesture.

[identity profile] ghostly-nyx.livejournal.com 2010-04-01 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Keepin' myself amused." It was a simple enough answer, and true. She'd only come to Smash Academy nearly three years ago now for something to do, new victims that weren't the hapless souls of Lavender Town.
"You gonna shut up an' let me sleep aready, or what? This is, like, 3 in the mornin' to me."

Well, the... volume of Jupiter's answer, as well as the angry scowl on her face, made it obvious that no, she was not going to let Nyx sleep.

"THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE COME TO A LECTURE IN THE FIRST PLACE! IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP, JUST GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM!"

Even if Nyx didn't react much outwardly... god damn that hurt. Her long, pointed ears weren't for show, and anything with that kind of volume set them ringing.
"Geez, yell a little louder, why dontcha? I don't think my folks back in Kanto heard you," She complained. "No, I'm gonna stay right here. I'm havin' a hard time sleepin' lately, an' hearin' this jackass drone on an' on does wonders. Puttin' me right t'sleep."

What made Jupiter's anger level skyrocket wasn't Nyx's request itself, but rather her language and especially the word she used to refer to Cyrus.

"... HOW DARE YOU!" she seethed. She focused her strength in one arm and her hand came down powerfully, trying to slap Nyx across the face.
