Basis of Mechanics #3 - A Project!

"Harrumph!"

Yet again, the common greeting rang through the room as the students sat down and Smithy addressed his class. "Today is a very important day. Each and every one of you are going to have a project to do."

He walked around the class as he continued. "You are each going to pair off with another student. I will allow you to choose who you pair off with. HOWEVER!" He faced the class. "If any of you are late or cannot decide for yourselves, I will decide for you. You can also ask me if you'd rather me decide for you. As for the project...

"Every two students are to build a mechanical robot. It does not matter what its form is, or how big or small it is. It must be a 'mecha' - that is, a mechanoid or a robot that you would see in some animations. You can make them like the ones you may or may not have seen in those shows, or you may make your own. Your grade will depend on how well it looks, as this project is merely to test your skills in the class thus far, as well as your willingness to work with others." The last few words were spoken with a very gruff tone; Smithy was used to working on his own, so it was odd to say this.

"Now, sign in, decide who you're going to pair off with, ask me any questions you'd like or if you want me to pair off with others, and begin! You have two weeks to finish this assignment. You may work on this outside of class anytime you wish; it is up to you to contact your partner outside of class. BEGIN!"

"Here," Jeff replied.

"Alright, find someone to pair up with. Or you may ask me to do so for you," Smithy responded.

"Yo, bra."

"Ah... Jake. Do find someone to pair up with, and remember that this is supposed to be a mecha, not a monster. Understand?" While impressed by his previous performance, Smithy felt he needed to address the issue.

"I'm here!" Tails' voice called as he came in. "I'm new. You can call me Tails!"

"Here!"

"Good, then. Go find someone to pair up with."

"Here!" chirped Apple Kid.

Knuckles was dubious about this. He was not incredibly good with the mechanical side of things. His autoshop grades were decent but Google was his friend when it came to looking up specific things for specific models of car.... very little of the skills he brought to that class were natural. Wave's help had been absolutely invaluable when it came to upgrading his car into an electric model.... he'd have been lost without her guidance.

Basicly... creating something from scratch like this was going to be a much trickier excersize than he'd tackled yet and he was feeling anxious that whoever he had the misfortune to wind up with was going to lose grade points due to his lack of expertise.

"I'm open."

Oh hey, that was... the red kid who talked about cars or auto-shop or something, right? Jeff didn't really pay much attention to other people's on-line journals. However, if this guy knew about cars, then he probably knew about mechanics. ... Right?

"Hey... mind if I team up with you?"

Jake just sat back, turned up his music, and waited to see if anyone asked to partner with him, tapping his foot to the beat.

Oh, wasn't that the guy who lost to him in the Junior Representative elections? And the one who freaked out and attacked him during April Fool's pranking? Yeah, that guy.

"Hey! You! Uhhh... Jake, right?! Let's build a robot!"

Slippy looked around. Who could he pair up with?

He then noticed the new student. Wasn't he the one who posted in his journal? What was his name, Tails?

"Hey!" He called out. "Wanna be partners?"

This was probably the only time in the world this phrase had ever been uttered.

Once Nester had paired off with Jake, he decided first that of course, they'd need to know what their robot would even be like. And... well, actually, he had no clue what to do from there. He wasn't fond of living robots (he's assuming these 'bots can just be non-working), so he didn't know anything about the process of how they're built.

"So, uhh, what now? Are we gonna start working on it yet or what?"

The only robot Slippy ever built was ROB64 and ROB was only meant to serve as a pilot for the Great Fox so Mechas was new territory for the mechanic.

But nonetheless, he was enthusiastic over the entire project because come on, seriously!? Fighting robots! Who the heck doesn't get excited over the prospect of building giant fighting robots?

"Your name's Tails, right?" Slippy asked as he pulled out a large sheet of paper from his backpack along with some writing and measuring instruments. "My name's Slippy. It's nice to meet ya'."
