He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother

Characters: Jeff, Ulty
What: Two "brothers" get together before one has to leave.
Where: Jeff's dorm, BE-8
When: ...Iunno? Dec. 11th, early evening maybe?
Rating: G

Ulty's usual bouncy happy walk was more of a listless shuffle as he made the trek to Jeff's dorm room. He wasn't happy. He'd sure tried to be, but he wasn't. For the whole day and night since he learned Jeff was going to be going away, the knowldge had hung over his head like a fog. Even when he was happy at the gaming club, pushing the buttons and making the pretty things move, the moment he'd gotten out the thought came right back.

At least he'd get to build something with him before he left. Ulty had made a point of picking out the best book he could find on Christmas, one with loads and loads of pictures. It was his favorite currently.

Ulty knocked on Jeff's door. "BIG BROTHER? IT ULTY. ULTY COME IN?"

It had been a busy day for Jeff, first with his usual classes, then spending a good portion of the day with Falcon, then popping in on Poo's meditation sessions... But still the day seemed far too short to him. There was so much more he wanted to do before the weekend.

It was making him anxious.

He nearly jumped at the knocking at the door, but the unmistakable booming voice that followed was familiar and... well, not exactly comforting. After an attack from the holographic Chimera during his spar with Falcon, Jeff wasn't exactly eager to see those teeth again so soon. Even worse was how horrible poor Ulty must have felt to be left alone like this so soon.

He opened the door, putting on a smile anyway. "Hey, Ulty. Yeah, come on in. You brought the book?"

Affection in the form of hugs with his mouth, maybe. No, this was the real, friendly Ulty. It was wrong of Jeff to think like that.

...It didn't help him from cringing slightly.

"U-um..." He tore his gaze away from Ulty's mouth and focused on the image in the book. "Alright, great! What sort of thing do you want to make first?" He gestured to a pile of both mechanical and craft supplies he'd set out on the floor earlier that evening. "I think I have the right stuff for most Christmas-y things..."

Jeff looked over the page, pursing his lips in thought. "Holiday Express, huh? Hey, yeah! We could even make a track that goes around the whole school!" Whoops, he was getting ahead of himself here. The first thing to do was to build the engine itself.

"Alright, let's see..." He sat next to the supplies and carefully set the open book down on the ground next to him. "You... have you learned about the basics of circuitry or even just electricity itself yet?"
