Sleeping Flora ((BACKDATED))
What: Daisy is in the hospital, in a coma. She has various visitors... will she wake up for one of them?
When: October 5th, Sunday morning (a couple of days after Daisy's and Dimentio's fight)
Where: Final Destination City Hospital. Daisy is on the fifth floor, Room 510.
Who: Daisy, King Rowan Flora (her dad), and anyone else who comes to visit.
Daisy's chest rose and fell slowly. Her breathing was labored, but steady. Clothed in nothing but a hospital gown, and her flower hair-clip and her earrings gone, she lay in the sterile, white sheets of the hospital bed, appearing to be asleep. However, it wasn't sleep she was under the influence of, but a deep coma.
She looked almost alien in her current condition. Her normally neat and perfect hair was completely disheveled. Her skin was ghostly pale. There was an oxygen mask over her nose and mouth. An IV tube was stuck in her left arm, while her right was hooked up to an ECG monitor through a clamp on her finger. The leads on the monitor indicated a weak, slow heartbeat.
The once-strong Princess Daisy Flora of Sarasaland now lay more weak and helpless than she had ever been in her entire life.
Aside from the beeping of the ECG monitor, the room had been disturbingly quiet. However, the eerie tranquility was disrupted when King Rowan Flora came bursting through the door to Daisy's room.
His eyes widened in terror upon seeing his daughter. "NO!"
He rushed over to the bed and knelt by Daisy's side. "No, no, NO! My daughter! Daisy, wake up! Please, wake up!"
Tears were gathering in the old king's eyes. "Wake up, Daisy! Please!"
A female nurse came sprinting into the room, out of breath. Apparently, she had been chasing the king down the hallway.
"King Flora! With all due respect, your highness, please, calm down."
Rowan snapped around to glare at the nurse. "Calm down? Calm down?! My daughter, my only child, is in a coma, and you're asking me to calm down?!"
"Sir, please! You're not making this situation any better for her or for yourself. Please calm down..."
Rowan took in a deep, calming breath. "I... I'm sorry. I just..."
He stared again at the young woman in the bed. Was that really his daughter? He barely recognized her in this state. Tears blurred his vision, and they rolled down his cheeks.
He gently stroked Daisy's face with the back of his hand. "My daughter... my little princess... my baby girl..." His voice choked on those last few words.
The nurse looked on in sympathy. "Shall I leave the two of you alone?"
The king nodded without looking at her. The nurse gave them one last sad look, and quietly exited, closing the door behind her.
"Daisy..."
The king was whispering into his daughter's ear. "Daisy... please... wake up. It's me, Daddy... oh, please, please, Daisy, don't leave me. I don't want to lose you like I lost your mother. I don't want to lose both my girls...!"
He took Daisy's small, delicate hand in his large, rough ones. Her skin was cold to the touch.
"Daisy...!"
Rowan could hold back no longer. He squeezed his eyes shut and shook with sobs.
"My baby...! My little girl...! Don't leave me...!"

Blaze had heard of everything, and stopped by to offer her condolences. She left a handwritten card on a nearby table.
Hey, I don't really know you yet, but I hope you feel better soon. You seem like a strong person, and I know you'll pull through this. Your classmate, Blaze.
She looked at the figure with a lamentful look on her face. "I can't believe... I didn't think it was that bad..."
no subject
((Timeline-wise, I'll place this sometime after Rowan leaves.))

He walked into the room holding a small boquet of daisies in on hand. At the sight of King Rowan, he gave a polite bow.
"Hello, Your Highness. It's Parakarry...We met before, remember? I just wanted to stop by to see Daisy."
no subject
"Ah, yes... hello..."
He closed his eyes and took another calming breath before looking at Parakarry again. "Th-thank you for coming."
He wiped his face with a sleeve. "I... I can't believe all this is happening. What if she never wakes up? I can't stand to lose her..."
Rowan turned his attention back to Daisy. "I want to stay strong, for the sake of my kingdom... but..." His voice trailed off.
no subject
A knot developed in his stomach as floated over toward Daisy's bed. Hand shaking, he set the flowers down on the nearby nightstand. Seeing Daisy hooked up to several monitors as she lay there looking as if she were dead...the whole thing felt surreal to him.
"Hi Daisy..." he spoke in a soft cracked voice. "It's P-parakarry. I just wanted to stop by t-t-to see you."
no subject
Rowan noticed the change in the monitor's readings. "Her heart... it's beating faster!"
He looked at Parakarry. "Do you think she...?"
He turned his attention back to Daisy. "Daisy? Can you hear me? It's me, Daddy!"
The monitor now displayed an occasional spike. She could hear him.
Deep in her mind, Daisy had been trying hard to wake up for her father, but was too deep in to succeed. At least she was at a greater level of consciousness at the moment.
'Daddy... I want to open my eyes... Parakarry... I can hear the both of you... help me...'
no subject
Parakarry's small tail wagged in hopeful anticipation as he turned his attention toward Daisy again.. He grabbed her by the hand. "Daisy? Can you hear us? Wake up!"
Maybe she'll wake up soon! She'll wake up any moment now!
no subject
Moments passed... nothing. Daisy's heart rate continued as before, but she didn't open her eyes.
Rowan's face fell. "She... she's not waking up..."
He looked at the monitor. "Could it be just a fluke...? No, no, I won't accept this!"
Rowan looked pleadingly at his daughter. "Daisy... if you can hear me, try to squeeze my hand. Please, Daisy. Try, please."
There was a faint twitch in Daisy's wrist. Suddenly, her hand gave a gentle squeeze on Rowan's fingers.
But it lasted for only a moment. Yet it was more than enough for Rowan, and for the first time since he'd arrived at the hospital, he smiled.
"She can hear us!" he said excitedly to Parakarry. He was starting to cry again, only with tears of joy.
"Do you know what this means, boy? We haven't lost her yet! That's my girl, always a fighter! Never underestimate the Flora Royal Family!"
The king had a tiny feeling that perhaps the hand squeeze was an involuntary reaction, as coma patients sometimes displayed. But it was indeed a sign that Daisy wasn't far gone. In any case, he brushed the feeling away, wanting to believe in his daughter. There was no way, not now, not after this, that he would fear cloud his judgment. There was always hope.
"Parakarry, m'lad," he said, "if you have anything to say to my daughter, now might be a good time to say it."
no subject
Please. Please wake up! Please!
no subject
Daisy's heart rate went back to the way it was before: slow, and weak. She had tried to wake up, but she had worn herself out doing so.
"No..."
King Rowan lowered his head. "I guess... I guess this isn't the day.
He looked back up with a determined expression. "But this isn't the end. I know Daisy will fight this. I know she'll wake up soon. And when she does..."
His voice trailed off. He couldn't think of a way to end that statement. All he knew was that he would be there for her.
"Parakarry... I'll be taking my leave now. Stay as long as you like with my daughter. I welcome any visitors to see her, any one of her friends. If not for me, she just might wake up for one of you. We can only wait and see."
Rowan picked himself up from the floor and reluctantly exited the room.
'I am not going back to Sarasaland until Daisy awakens,' he thought as he walked down the hall. 'I will stay at my hotel room until she wakes up, and I don't care if they have to elect a new king if I'm gone for too long. My daughter means more to me than anything else, my crown be damned.'
no subject
Parakarry's wings drooped as Daisy's heartbeat slowed down.
No...
"Yes, King Rowan.." he replied without looking at him. Parakarry heard the door shut as he took a seat next to the bed. With his hands shaking, he touched Daisy's hand. "Please wake up."

He saw the King arrive, and decided it was best to go. Daisy was better off being visited by family, after all. He'd felt odd about going to her room... he was still so confused by the whole thing. It was odd, really... this whole ordeal had been something he'd only known about at the end, but to be there and see it's conclusion made him feel at least somewhat involved.
He got up and walked out swiftly, not wanting any sort of praise or recognition for his part in bringing her here. Not wanting to answer any more questions - he had of course told the doctors everything he knew upon their battered and bruised arrival. She was safe now, and in good hands. That's what mattered most.
He'd visit again soon, though.

He'd brought a small basket of fruit that he'd selected himself - it was on the verge of ripeness. The news he'd heard was that Daisy was in something called a coma which meant you were sort of asleep for a long while. So, ripe fruit might spoil before she woke up. He also brought a letter.
+~+
Hi Daisy.
I hope you get to read this sooner than later. The nurses I spoke to told me they don't know when you will wake up, but it could be any time. So, I'll just keep hoping that it will be soon.
This letter is with a basket of fruit - I don't know if you like fruit, but it always makes me feel better when I'm feeling less than 100%. If it goes bad before you wake up, I'll get you some more.
It's hard to know what to say - I'm really glad I happened upon the battle, if only so that I could be there to make sure you got the treatment you needed. Though it was also pretty nerve wracking to be there as well - if only because of the kids.
I think they're OK. I'm sure Dimentio is looking after them. I hope he is. I'm gonna try and visit them soon myself. I saw them once when I got back to school after dropping you off here and they seemed pretty scared. I reassured them as best as I could but I'm no good at that kinda stuff. They get along good with Harley, too.
Well, I guess that's everything. Sorry if this sounds all lame and stuff.
I hope you get better soon.
Your buddy
Knuckles the Echidna.

He set the basket and the sealed envelope down on the bedside table. The nurses also said that compa patients could sometimes hear you when you spoke. He tried to say something... but it was hard to know WHAT to say. That, and she looked so small and fragile. It was a strange and sobering feeling... as if breaking the silence might hurt her somehow.

A quiet, just barely audible moan issued from Daisy's throat. A finger on her right hand twitched ever-so-slightly. The leads on her ECG monitor indicated a faster, but still weak, heartbeat.
She could hear him...
no subject
"There." he said under his breath. "Warm this place up a little."
He carefully pulled the sheet up a little so it covered her better. He had no idea about ECG monitors or anything like that so even though he noticed the change in tempo, he couldn't say what it meant.
no subject
Deep inside her mind, she tried to force herself to consciousness.
'Knuckles...! I can hear you...! I've got to wake up...! I've got to try harder...!'
no subject
no subject
'Wake up,' she told herself. 'Wake up, now. You've been trying so hard all this time; Grambi knows how long it's been. You've got to wake up. Wake up, wake up! Now! NOW!'
The leads on the monitor showed a much stronger heartbeat, and it was a little speedier than before.
'Damn it, WAKE UP! DO IT!'
"Nnnnhh... neh... n-nuh... culs..."
no subject
He looked around. There was a little button beside her bed with the word 'Nurses' printed above it in bold, red letters. He moved next to it and his finger hovered right over it, ready to push it...
no subject
Her vision was blurry at first. But as it cleared up, she slowly realized Knuckles was sitting before her.
She blinked a few times, trying to make absolutely sure she wasn't imagining things.
"Knuckles... Knuckles, is that you?" she said in a quiet whisper.
no subject
"Yeah Daisy! It's me! Geeze, you gave everyone a fright! You awake properly now or...? You need anything?"
He hoped the doctors would come quickly - maybe Daisy's Father was still in the building too?
no subject
Daisy smiled. "Knuckles, it's really you! I knew I could hear you!"
Her eyes darted around. "Where am I?"
She noticed the ECG monitor, and the clamp on her finger. She recognized what the monitor was, as she had her tonsils removed when she was a child.
"... Am I in a hospital? Knuckles, what happened? I can barely remember... the Final Smash... and then... nothing."
no subject
He frowned. "You used that final smash... Dimentio got the kids n Harley out of the way n I stayed to make sure you were alright... your attack winged me, but I was able to get you here afterwards bein' you passed out."
no subject
"You... you brought me here?"
Daisy's eyes suddenly widened. "Oh my gosh! My attack didn't hurt you badly, did it? I'll never forgive myself if it did!"
no subject
Knuckles waved a hand dismissively. "Not to disrespect the strength of your attack, Daisy, but it didn't get me too bad. Nothin' to worry yourself over at all!"
He unzipped the light jacket he was wearing. Even through his fur you could see a short line of still fresh scar tissue, knitted by a few days healing and some neat, if thick, home made stitches. (He didn't trust doctors with this task and prefferred to take care of it himself.) Keeping in mind the Echidna was completely self raised in the wild and had gotten MUCH worse than this on his own, let alone by being attacked, it barely warranted mention to his mind.
"See? Barely a flesh wound." he grinned reassuringly and zipped back up. "More to the point, how are YOU feeling?"
no subject
She frowned. "I am so sorry! I never meant to...!"
Her voice trailed off. She realized she lacked the energy to fire apologies left and right, as much as she wanted to. She felt horrible for hurting Knuckles, but maybe one "sorry" was enough?
Daisy's face fell. "I... I feel tired... and my head hurts a little..." she said, responding to Knuckles' question. "But other than that, I'm fine, I guess."
She paused. "Knuckles? I'm going to be in a lot of trouble for this, aren't I?"
no subject
He stretched a little in the chair. "As for getting in trouble.. I got no clue. I mean, I know we're not supposed to fight outside of organised sparring matches... and I know the track field is being flattened and re-seeded cuz it got broke up kinda bad. But Headmaster hand is away, Crazy hand doesn't seem to be...ahh... enforcing any sorts of rules, and maybe the teachers will take your health into consideration...?"
no subject
Her voice lowered a little, her tone humbled, and she look very ashamed. "I absorbed the Smash Ball's powers a long time ago and didn't release it until the fight. Did you see how my eyes were yellow, instead of blue? Remember drama class? Did you notice my eyes were different?
"Not only were my eyes different, I was different, period. I... was acting a like a total bitch. It wasn't blatant... at times I just plain hid it. I was casual, I guess you might say. Sort of like Dimentio..."
She shuddered. "I've learned my lesson, Knuckles. I'm never, ever going to tangle with something I don't understand in the first place. I nearly drove myself mad from the Smash Ball's power. And for what?"
She closed her eyes. "J-just so I... so I could see what Luigi had gone through? To see what was in his mind when he was affected by a Smash Ball, too, when he went mad?! I thought I could somehow replicate the situation, I thought I could control it! But I was wrong!"
Daisy broke down in sobs. "My feelings for him have already hurt me so many times! And now I'm in a hospital! Why haven't I learned, why?!"
The truth had finally come out. The poor princess couldn't take it anymore.
"Knuckles, I don't expect you to understand any of this, but... I've been so focused on Luigi that I keep forgetting how many others care about me! I kept thinking I was alone, and I was wrong! I heard the voices of everyone who came to visit me! I'm not alone, and it took all this to make me realize it... I'm such a fool!"
Aside from the occasional choking sob, she was silent for a moment or two.
"... Why is it people always want what they can't have?" she said quietly. "He doesn't love me, not like that. There's no chance he ever will. None. He loves another man. I want to be happy for him, but I have so much trouble..."
Tears continued running down her face. She couldn't believe she had just poured her entire heart out to Knuckles, of all people. They barely knew each other. Why him? Would he even understand?
no subject
"...uhm... well... the...er... the smash ball? I guess... At least now you know your limits. We never learn anything if we don't push ourselves.... I noticed your eyes were a different color but I keep seeing ads for colored contacts. I figured you wanted 'em to.. match your dress n shoes...?"
He cleared his throat "...as...for Luigi. I don't know much about the guy... but... You can't help who you have feelings for. Getting over those feelings...? No clue how to go about that but...ahh... My experience is that time n patience fixes most things."
Oh. Man. He felt more than a little lame at this point. He was probably being about as comforting as a wet towel on a rainy day.
no subject
Wait a minute. What did Knuckles just say before he gave his advice?
She paused as it finally sank in. Then, she burst out laughing.
"Wait, wait! Did you-- did you say, 'colored contacts?' Really!"
Daisy couldn't help but laugh. The idea of trying to match her eyes with the rest of her outfit was too funny for words, and yet, not very far-fetched.
"Kn-knuckles, haha, I know I'm very fashion-conscious, but... oh my gosh, contacts!" she giggled. "Hoo... I'm so sorry, I'm not trying to mock you or anything. It's just that I'm starting to realize why no one found my eye color so suspicious, and it's just way too funny!"
She wiped her face of tear marks. "I can actually picture myself wearing yellow contacts... or maybe orange ones... or teal, to match my earrings or my hair clip."
Daisy smiled. It was a good thing she could change moods very quickly, because Knuckles had cheered her right up.
"Hey, Knuckles?"
She reached out a hand and rested it on one his gloved ones.
"Thanks for bringing me to the hospital. You probably saved my life doing that... I'm very grateful. And..."
She blushed, though she wasn't sure why. "Thanks for coming to see me. It means more to me than--"
She stopped herself and blushed even harder. She had almost said, "It means more to me than you'll ever know." But that would have been way too forward.
"... Um, let's just say it means a lot," she corrected herself.
no subject
He couldn't help but chuckle along with her though, relieved that she was no longer upset. "Well, it was the first thing that came to mind and it kinda stuck! And don't mention it - no-one in their right mind would have left you there on the track field, the state you were in. And I'dve visited sooner but it's kinda hard to find a sitter for Harley some times... I bought you a fruit basket!" he said pointing at the gift he'd gotten her. "..er.. dunno if you like fruit, but it always makes me feel better when I'm not doin' so great."
He was of course blushing as her hand sat on his, but he didn't mention it. It was sort of overload for him at the moment - he wasn't used to this level of emotionally charged conversation!
"..speaking of Harley, I should probably head on back, make sure he's OK... and get some of those nurses in here! I guess I broke the button when I pushed it..." he said frowning at the indentation he'd left in the wall in his excitement.
no subject
She frowned. "Oh, I wish you could stay longer... but, oh well, I'll see you when I get back to school or something. I just think I'd feel very weird if I were left alone here now that I'm actually awake. It's alright, though. I know Daddy's gonna be here real soon!"
Daisy looked at the button Knuckles had pushed and was quite shocked. was the echidna really that strong? Or was he just that excited?
"Heh, don't worry about the button, Knuckles. The hospital probably makes enough money to clone itself a thousand times over, let alone enough to replace that button.
"So... I guess this is goodbye for now?"
no subject
"And I'd like to stay, but there's stuff I gotta get done n yeah, you'll see me in classes when you get back... which is hopefully gonna be soon." He followed her eye to the button on the wall and cleared his throat "Uhm... I'll... make sure to tell them about that. Even if they can afford to replace it... I should really do that for them. Or at least pay for it... it was my fault. Just.. kinda.. dunno my own strength when I get excited sometimes! haha!"
He got to his feet, and waved as he headed for the door. "I'll make sure the nurses and doctors come in right away, and your Dad, too!" he said. "See you at school! Feel better soon!"
no subject
"Alright," she said, "I'll see you around, then. Bye, Knuckles! Take care. And thank you again."

Goombario had almost come with Parakarry, but backed out at the last minute. What was he supposed to say when he got there? Books didn't prepare one for this. They told you what caused comas, and what the chances of survival were.
So, later, when he thought no one else was coming over, he went to visit holding a large, pale orange stuffed bear. A little note attached to it simply read "From Goombario". Once more, what could he say? This was not something he could deal with. The last time anyone he knew was this bad was when he was very young, with one of his grandparents. She didn't come through.
With his other grandparents still going strong and a relatively quiet life until recent years, he hadn't been exposed to a situation like this in a long time. It seemed utterly alien to him.
Walking down the hallway towards Daisy's room left Goombario with an odd feeling of detachment, like he wasn't even controlling himself anymore. He was just watching himself take one step at a time. But, hey, removing oneself from the situation felt nice, so maybe he could get used to that.
He barely registered opening the door. Barely registered Daisy's shocking condition. Barely registered his hold on the bear tightening, forgetting that it was supposed to be for her comfort, not his. "D...Daisy..."
no subject
Though she made no movement or sound to indicate it, she could hear him.
no subject
His mind once again pulled away, leaving him with a surreal feeling as facts went through his head to further detach him from it all. It might last a few weeks, if it's average. Recovery is gradual. She's lucky it's not deep, judging by what they've got her hooked up to. Being on a big-time respirator increases the chances of infectious diseases. Pneumonia would be devastating. The coma itself could mean she's got brain trauma. Her chances are good, but...
His mind blanked out now. Separating himself from his emotions only worked so well. He sighed. "Just hang in there. You have people waiting for you here."
no subject
'I know, Goombario. I know.'
no subject
"See ya." Goombario then left, and as he walked out the doorway, he consoled himself with the fact that, hey, at least he didn't cry. Brief visits were good for that,

Yoshi could have done something to stop Luigi from releasing those bad sprouts, but he didn't, and Luigi got in trouble and had to leave school for a while. Then Teacher Blacky got hurt, too! And now, Yoshi found out all too late that Daisy was in a fight and got really hurt! So hurt that she couldn't wake up!
If only Yoshi had found out earlier, he could have done something to help! But now... all he could do was give her support.
Yoshi clutched a container of cookies to his chest as he entered the room. He didn't like the smells of the hospital one bit, and all the wires and beeping and whiteness made him feel anxious. Seeing Daisy lying amidst it all just made it worse. Yoshi set the cookies down on the table where a few other gifts were and inched over to the bed.
"Umm..." Yoshi stammered. "Yoshi doesn't know if Daisy can hear Yoshi right now... but Yoshi wishes Yoshi could help more and hopes Daisy feels better soon!"
no subject
'Yoshi... just being here is help enough... I'm glad people care about me... it gives me the strength to keep trying... I promise, I promise I'll wake up soon!'
