Just as she said, Melia was at the shore of the lake in the early afternoon, already directing her bodyguards around the scattered, remaining pieces of the Egg Carrier littering the ground. What she really wanted to do, though, was find those Chao. It was a bit selfish of her, she thought, to be more concerned about finding the cute critters than cleaning up the lake, but she did have a good reason. She had to make sure they were all right in the aftermath.

And she wanted to pet one. Or all of them.

Pulse really didn't see any reason in bothering Sonic about helping to clean up; after all, look at those tiny little arms. Pulse figured he wouldn't be very much help himself if he had such itty bitty skinny little noodle arms like that.

However, it appeared that Sonic was fairly familiar with those strange blue things that were walking about everywhere and occasionally flying through the air and making weird mumbling noises.

When Pulse found time to take a short break from working on his scrap pile, he sought out the blue hedgehog, gesturing inquisitively toward the creature he was carrying around.

"What is that?"

"Oh hey, Pulse!" Sonic replies, turning about with the critter in his arms. "What, this? This is a Chao!"

He hefts the gelid toddler in his arms. It waves.

"Cute little guy, huh? I only saw them in my world until now, but it turns out there's a whole community of 'em here by the lake!"

"A... chow? Is... Is that short for something, or..."

He looks at the creature, noticing how its whole body seemed to jiggle and quiver somewhat as Sonic hefted it. It immediately reminded him of something similarly jiggly and quivery which he dearly hoped was not capable of following him to this world and honestly prayed that he would never see ever ever ever again. Ever. ...At least this jiggly thing had more than one eye. He could probably dissociate the two based on that. That and having limbs and stuff. Still, he gave a slight shiver.

"...What are they made of, anyway?"

"Water. Well, mostly water. They call 'em chao because... uh... well, it's a long story."

The chao coos. He sets it down and it toddles off.

That. was. not. reassuring. His hands immediately went to his upper arms in an anxious self-hug as he watched the Chao walking away.

"Oh... well. Okay. Um. ...Interesting."

His eyes remained fixated on the creature as he tried making evaluations in his head on whether or not it was much of a threat.

"...Are they known to... be attracted to... concentrations of electrical energy? Just curious."

The Chao skips towards Pulse and waves. Sonic follows at a slow lope.

"Not particularly. Why?"

Aah it's coming right for us. Pulse remained rooted to the spot, however.

"Oh, ah, um. Not, uh... why's it coming closer?"

He gave a slight nervous cough.

"Is it friendly?"

"Sure is! They all are. Why, you actually thought it was gonna hurt you? Play pranks, sure, some of the dark chao have a tendency to do that, but they'd never hurt anyone."

Said chao is now looking at him, head tilted. Studying him, maybe? Sonic passes it and stands next to Pulse.

"Why not say hi?"

Why not? After all, it appeared to be sentient.

Pulse nodded, then got down on his knees so that he was closer to eye-level with the Chao. Though attempting to present himself in a friendly manner, it was apparent that he was still nervous.

"Hello."
