"Oh."

Ian doesn't seem particularly surprised by this. It's a little awkward to talk about, the whole 'technically being dead' thing. He sort of shifts and slumps a little more with his hands on his knees. It makes sense, though, her leaving. Maybe not so young, but sometimes plays out in unexpected ways.

"I sorta guessed you wouldn't stick around there forever. We all knew you had big things to do," He shrugs. He knew that military life was frustrating, for her at least. It was pretty okay for Ian. He fit into it well and followed orders well enough. He would never be some strategic genius like his brother, but he had hopes of being stationed somewhere semi-permanently and get to work on something he loved.

He spends a moment glancing at Samus sidelong again. Slumped up against this wall with him, she seemed vulnerable. Human. Small. For a second, his hand is lifted as if he were to reach over and brush a bit of hair away from her face. He chickens out, though, and not for the first time in his life but he's not sure if Samus realizes that. He redirects his hand to toy with the top of the bottle and offers an apology many years too late.

"Sorry." It's soft and quiet. It's not even really directed at the Samus sitting next to him, but one much further in her past. Sorry for being that loss. Sorry for causing that hurt. He wishes he could have been there for her.
