Her heart practically lodged itself into her throat when she heard him and she turned his words over in her head. She knew it, of course. But it was a lot harder to handle when he actually said it to her. Not having it in the air meant she could ignore it. And she wouldn't feel caught between him and Marie like she did.
And she knew she would, too. It was... difficult. Difficult not to be honest with her own feelings. How much dishonour was it to be truthful? By doing so, was it insulting Marie? But not saying anything at all...
