Tactics and Strategy 003

Who: Hawke and YOU.
What: TACTICS AND STRATEGY
When: Wednesday, October 20th, night.
Where: The main quad.
Warnings: Idk you guys are crazy.

[Today, at normal Tactics and Strategy time, there is a note on Hawke's classroom door that instructs all enrolled to meet by the flagpole on the main quad at 7 PM, just as it starts to get dark. Did you have plans tonight? Too bad, you're coming to class.]

[Hawke's been out here at the flagpole since like six thirty! He's sitting by the fountain and reading a book. What a weirdo.

However, when the clocktower strikes seven, he stands, surveys the assembled group, and addresses the class.]

Those of you who were in this class last term should remember our various discussions on the concept of working as a unit. For those of you who were not, I suppose I can take a moment to provide a refresher.

Working as part of an ensemble is challenging. There might be many of you who prefer working on your own, but a great deal of tactics and strategy involves learning how to work as a team. Operating in this way allows you to compensate for your own weaknesses through the strength of an ally, fill gaps in your knowledge, and, most importantly, support each other.

Today, I'm going to split you into two teams in order to play a game some of you might be familiar with.

[He takes out a BLUE pennant, and a RED pennant.]

Capture the Flag. The rules are simple. The main quad is divided vertically in two. Each team is given a side, and a pennant that can be hidden anywhere on their "territory", as long as it is visible. Take that to mean what you will.

The object of the game is obvious. Be the first to capture the other team's flag and return safely to your team's side. This fountain will serve as the dividing line. Each team may designate an area as their "jail". If you are tagged by a member of the opposite team on their territory, you must go to their jail, and you are only free if tagged by a member of your team. Even if all members of one team end up in jail, the game does not end until the pennant is found and returned to the opposing team's side.

For your team to be successful, you will not only have to work as a cohesive unit, but also be cognizant of many different elements. Spend too much time defending your own flag and what you need to win the game is ignored. Conversely, spend too much time on the opposing side looking for their flag, and yours remains unprotected and you run the risk of getting caught. To win, you will need to find a balance of offense and defense, as well as utilize stealth and coordination. We are meeting at night to provide the added aid or obstacle of darkness. You may only use the main quad. Indoor areas are off limits. I think you'll find the trees and bushes provide plenty of cover.

Teams will be assigned when I take attendance. Each team will have fifteen minutes to strategize, assign a jail area, and hide their flag before we begin. Any questions?
