Knuckles was hit full force by the beam and indeed was shoved backwards by the highly concentrated energy - it sort of felt like being doused by scalding water at high pressure. He hit the ground and bounced - but strangely enough, the thing that hurt most was his eyes. He'd been looking right at R.O.B. when the laser hit him so he was experiencing something like snow blindness on a huge scale.

Never one to give up, he got to his feet as quickly as he could, eyes squinted and watering, gloved hands up in front of his face, defensive, and feet working their way to sending him backwards and side to side so he had time to regroup.
